    Default In need of acorns!

Anyone nearby have extra acorns to share?
I was not able to collect as many as I used to in past years.
I need them for my rehab-to-release kids.

Checking with all the locals...Charley Chuckles, Rescue04, Gina, Legomom, Fireeyez, sending y'all PMs.
If you also know of anyone else nearby that can help please let me know.

Sweet Simon's Mommy also needs some for Peaches and Zuzu,
so I plan to share as well

    Thanks Abby, I'll keep looking.
Up til now I'd collect enough to last me the whole year in my freezer.
It's a first for me not to have any by April!

I have a set of juveniles that will be released in a month and have never had one.

Oh rats! I sure wish you had spoken up a few weeks ago. I'm the ONE with a freezer full of acorns and NO squirrel. In my new found 'squirrel zeal' I started stashing acorns in the fall. The entire darn freezer was full of them. I noticed that people were washing and floating and all sorts of odd things so I didn't offer any up. I just collected them (green or fresh dropped) and froze them. I had a huge party a few weeks ago and needed some freezer space so I started feeding them to the wilds. I fed most of them to the wilds. As it was, the few bags that were in the freezer were discovered by family members helping me to clean up after the party. Now they are talking 'intervention'.

I just checked and I only have 2 gallon size freezer bags and a quart left. Unless someone very close wanted them, there are not enough left to justify long distance transfer. They have to be fed immediately upon thawing because they get very wet and would spoil rapidly.

Too bad you didn't speak up sooner because now you need acorns and I have a yard full of 'entitlement' squirrels looking for a hand out.

    No worries Patty!
    Hope your wilds enjoy them.
I am going to recruit people to collect acorns for me this coming fall,
so if you are able to I would be willing to pay shipping for them
flat rate USPS you know I don't want to find myself in this spot next year!

I wish I would have known you guys needed acorns so badly. I had so many this past year. I shipped 2 boxes of them to IR in the Fall since she did not have any for her releases. I froze some for my overwinter crew and for the Princess and I am down to a bag and a half.

If I have a good acorn year again this year, I'll save as many as possible. Do you think if I freeze them and then ship them they will be okay? Or will the freeze thaw moisture cause issues?

I would pick and ship asap with something to collect moisture
    like paper towels.
Then the receiver (me? lol) can freeze them upon arrival.

My backyard gets so many I have resorted to raking them into a pile, then scooping them up with a snow shovel, then I place them on a shaker screen (a screen I made from hardware cloth and scrap wood) and gently shake them to get the grass particles from raking off, then they get a water bath.
