    Default avacado help

OMG - Spouse gave avacado to squirrels last night WITH THE SKIN ON! Help. My squirrels (2 of the 5 - Ginger the wondersquirrel and Bear my NR) are very slugish. Ginger has been throwing up and is rubbing her face. Any suggestions. I am just sick. Is there anything I can do. From the looks of the Avacado in the fridge looks like he just gave them small pieces - maybe the size of a nickel. Ginger is a mess.

I just found this - has anyone lost a squirrel to avacado - Ginger is going down hill fast.

Avocados. The leaves, fruit, bark and seeds of avocados have
all been reported to be toxic. The toxic component in the avocado is "persin,"
which is a fatty acid derivative. Symptoms of toxicity include difficulty
breathing, abdominal enlargement, abnormal fluid accumulations in the chest,
abdomen and sac around the heart. The amount that needs to be ingested to cause
signs is unknown. Do not feed your pet any component of the avocado.

Avocado (Persea americana) The toxic principle in avocado is persin and
leaves, fruit, bark, and seeds of the avocado have been reported to be toxic to
birds and various other species. Several varieties of avocado are available, but
not all varieties appear to be equally toxic. In birds, clinical effects seen
with avocado poisoning include respiratory distress, generalized congestion, and
death. Onset of clinical signs usually occurs after 12 hours of ingestion with
death occurring within 1-2 days of the time of exposure. Small birds such as
canaries and budgies are considered to be more susceptible, however, clinical
signs have been observed in other species.

with any vomit issue...hydration is key.
Many here will say that avocodos are deadly..I disagree.
I have given my sqs avocodos everyday for years with the skin...few will eat the skin, but some have and without incident.
Yes with birds, I have been told they are deadly...not so much with sqs.
We have huge trees on most streets, sqs eat them daily.
If you think they are dying, they need activated charcoal in order to help absorb the toxic matter...probably too late though if feed yesterday. VET care is my advise. Could they have gotten into anything else?
what are the actual symptoms other than vomiting?
    push fluids
    good luck

Thanks Jackie. Ya know I've given avacados for years, just peel them. But many many times the squirrels have gotten into them when they are on the counter and have even stolen them chowing down the entire fruit/veg. Ginger & Bear have been totally confined this weekend as we have company in. Ginger is rubbing her head like crazy on everything - odd behavior and is lathargic. Barfed a white paste???? She drinking a lot and did eat an apple piece but won't touch her breakfast. Bear is sleeping and has no interest in anything. Its odd - Ginger isn't in her nest, but laying here watching me. Vet is out of town - I have 8am appt Monday with dog.
Odd thing - none of the winter juvies are sick.

Not sure if this will help or not, but years ago my cat ate part of a philodendron, which are highly toxic and hits the central nervous system fast. I called the vet after hours (Sunday night) and he told me to do the following:

BURN toast - make it BLACK and smokey (to get charcoal)
SCRAPE the burnt toast and mix with a little water to make a liquid
FORCE it down her throat (make her eat it)
Follow with an infant serving of Pepto
    Follow with some Chicken Broth

I did it, she was PISSED to say the least, but 15 years later she is still very much alive and does NOT eat my plants anymore.

Like I said, I do not know if it will work with a squirrel, and the chicken broth may have to be replaced with FV or formula, but thought I'd put it out there.

Like mugz said, at this point, push fluids like a madman - you are trying to flush her system out.

Listen to Jackie, she knows what she is talking about! My wilds in South Florida ate the avocados faster than we could get to them. Charcoal can be found at WalMart, Walgreens, CVS- always have on hand for emergencies. I would not try to use peroxide. Push fluids!!!!!!

I believe at this point, flushing is the best option. LOTS OF FLUIDS. Sending loads of prayers.

Are you certain the squirrels ate the skin of the avocado? At the center where I volunteer they NEVER peel the avocados but as far as I know no squirrel has ever eaten the peel. They just eat out the fruit like they know the other stuff is bad and not to eat it.

I am concerned maybe this is something else altogether, so treat it as if it is poisoning from eating the avocado, but also be thinking of other possibilities.

Also, not sure how much good charcol and vomitting will do at this point since they possibly ate it last night. It's probably already in their systems and vomitting might make things worse.

    Fluids are definetely important now.

2 seperate cages in very clean environment. Same foods. Same branches (from my apple tree) that they get often. Same friut and veg - 1 nut each evening after they eat bites, blocks, fruit and veg. Only new addition was Avocado yesterday (we made Mexican so we had some in the house). All 3 have taken a turn for the worse. 2 others are perfect. No activated charcol at local CVS - but had pill form??? What to do???? Fluids - Olive drank like crazy Bear and Ginger are listless. This can not be my new year. Thanks guys - I am in a fit of tears. I haven't even fed the rest of my critters - Company from out of town and spouse are not pleased.

SRBT.......that's what I am saying too...
IMO honestly...too late for charcoal if from last night...
and as I stated earlier...push fluids! FORCEFULLY IF NEEDED, very important for any toxic issues AND vomiting issues.
Vomiting is always followed with hydration, common sense until you are scared in crisis...follow your gut...take ten deep and be the eyes of the sqs for us...
    be very thorough with details...
I opt to NOT USE peroxide...I have read it is very contraversal...some say yeah, some say no..
but you should read before making the decision yourself...
    http://www.the-natural-path.com/hydr...e-therapy.html

    there are many articles...
dilution maybe the quencher ...be very sure.

I get nervous because when you are 1pound...there is no room for mistakes.

    sending good loving vibes.

now look what I found! I always give my squirrels from my apple tree in my yard:

Different opinions have been voiced about the toxicity apple trees. Sources like toxicologist Gillian Willis indicate that apple is safe: others state that it may be toxic part of the year
