Several threads recently prove to us that simply having this as a Sticky is NOT enough.

That said, HLS I think we can bump once a day, in the Emergency Life Threatening Forum, ok? I truly appreciate the way you've kept this important question up front in many forums but by the same token we don't want to dilute the message. We'll never know how many folks you DID get through to in the past few days, who got the baby to a competent rehabber and didn't try to keep it and feed it Gatorade and Cheerios......

    Thank you, Happy Little Squirrelly!

Do you have the resources to help little squirrels like this?

"Why is it that when we find a baby squirrel, bunny, bird or even a puppy or kitten the FIRST thing that we want to do is FEED it? Chalk it up to motherly instincts, or just a need to do something-anything to help this poor little thing – Whatever the cause, it can be absolutely deadly to wildlife babies for the public to feed them. Everyone knows someone who once raised a baby squirrel, or raccoon, or bird. We know it happens, and we’re okay with that to some extent. We just wish that we could impress upon the public that your neighbor, uncle, old friend who successfully raised that baby – They got LUCKY. Some babies, depending on age, size, temperment, and health will survive regardless of how wrongly it is fed and raised. This is NOT the case 99% of the time.

We are not trying to deprive you of the joy of raising a baby and releasing it back to the wild. We are trying to spare you from the heartache of watching said baby die in your arms despite you trying to do everything right. More often than not, finders will feed babies the wrong things, baby will do well for a short period of time, then crash. This is when the finder calls us. Baby is struggling to breathe, has diarrhea, is dehydrated and won’t stay warm, and then we’re called in to the rescue. Too often, this leaves us rehabbers in an impossible position. We want to do everything we can to save the baby, but sometimes there is nothing that we can do to reverse the damage that has been done. This is extremely frustrating for us.

Try to see it from our perspective – You found a baby. It was adorable and so tiny. You brought it inside, fed it who-knows-what, and kept it for days, weeks, months. Now baby is sick, and you don’t know why. You call the rehabber, who gladly takes the baby in. We go home and spend $10-$100 on critical care to save this baby. We put them in incubators. We run IV lines. We administer antibiotics. We get up every two hours to provide care to try to keep baby alive. Then, we watch baby die from care that you provided incorrectly, even though we were just a phone call away. We do understand that a crying baby is difficult to not feed, and we cannot fault you for trying. We know that you mean well. If only good intentions were enough to keep these little babies alive…."

I wish I knew where to look more often so I wouldnt have to bother others. Like I just now watched a video on trimming teeth. The board is a wonderful board loaded with info. I just still have not figured out how to navigate it easily. Not from lack of being on here. I just keep digging for knowledge..lol

I have removed the last few posts because they really needed to be in a thread of their own, in the Emergency section -- and now that's done.

    *** BUMP ***

As baby season 2015 approaches it can't be repeated often enough:

raising a baby squirrel is difficult, expensive, and labor-intensive,
    and.....

Squirrels do not make good pets!
    Listen up:

You've found a baby squirrel, and you've found The Squirrel Board.
You're here in the Emergency Forum and you've read a little bit about how to keep the baby alive. Maybe you've warmed the baby up and he's starting to get active and nuzzle your hand. Maybe you've tried a little warm Pedialyte and he loved it and he looks so cute while he's slurping that syringe and when he's all curled up in a ball. And you figure, smart person that you are, that you're doing so well, it can't be THAT hard to raise this baby yourself.......

    Yes, it can.

Please ask yourself the following questions:

    • Are you prepared to go out NOW and find goat's milk to start him on formula, followed by Esbilac ($20-30 per canister) or Fox Valley Squirrel formula that can only be ordered ON LINE and costs upwards of $11 per canister?
    • Are you prepared to go wherever you have to go, NOW, to get a 1cc syringe to feed this baby properly without aspirating him?
    • Are you prepared starting right NOW to feed this baby as frequently as required by its age and condition, including getting up in the middle of the night?
    • Are you prepared to use, or go out and buy NOW, a heating pad without the automatic shut-off feature? It is an absolute MUST for baby squirrels. Other heat sources will not be adequate and the baby will die.

    • When your baby starts "clicking" and becomes lethargic because he accidentally inhaled a bit of formula, will you be able to get prescription-only antibiotics within the next 2 hours to save its life? There are NO over- the- counter antibiotics that will cure pneumonia in a baby squirrel. NONE.

    • Are you prepared, LATER ON as the squirrel grows, to buy or build a series of appropriate cages for the animal's age, to buy expensive fresh produce which the squirrel requires for good health, to seek out skilled veterinary help even if you are in an "illegal state", and to learn how to "soft release" the squirrel in an appropriate release site so it will have a chance to survive in the wild?

    • Are you prepared to resist ALL temptation to "introduce" the squirrel to your household pets, thereby giving the squirrel the delusion that cats and dogs will not kill him when he is out in the wild? Are you prepared to keep the squirrel and the pets separate for the entire life of the squirrel?

    • If you have answered NO to even one of these questions, you need to contact a qualified wildlife rehabilitator and we will help you do that.....

When the squirrel is in inexperienced hands nothing depends on the squirrel,
and the situation is a moot point. It is at the mercy of one's inexperience!

We all are born with inexperienced hands.....................
Places like TSB help to train those hands to perform "miracles"
But one--must ask--& , listen to the answers given & , follow those recommendations....
    or squirrels will suffer.

Forgive me, but sometimes I want to add this line as well:

Do you DRIVE or have a spouse who will bring you ANYWHERE? If not, you must live above or adjacent to a WALMART. You will need constant supplies in order to raise this baby properly and no, there are no household substitutes you can use nomatter what that "other site" told you!!!
