I looked at what I think was your original post on the tail issue, and you say there are "no bugs," but mites tend to gravitate to places where vessels and capillaries are plentiful and easily accessed, and the tail is a prime target. Most mites are not visible to the naked eye either. I had a squirrel recently with two unexplained, rather large, yellowish scabs on its tail. Mites turned out to be the cause.

If it's mites, then I think Revolution is the recommended treatment. A skin scrape by a vet will help with diagnosing. Are you in FL right now? If so, we have several members around the state with vet support that can hook you up. If you're in OK, which I think is illegal, get a cat-sized tube of Revolution (any pet store, I think) & place one drop on the back of her neck.

PBJ...is this the course of action to take?

Have you tried a cone? You could take it off while she is supervised and fed. If the tail was dead then they will do this. My Scoopies did this to the last third of her tail but she has stopped and it is healing. Her tail doesn't work or have any feeling in it. It might be better that she did because it was in her way anyhow. Not that I would suggest this as the best method. It is just a squirrels way of self medicating.

Did your squirrels tail function properly before she chewed it?

Yes, but a skin scraping can miss mites. You need to give .05 ccs per pound. I think all sizes of Revolution are the same strength of selemectin--kittens and puppies, cats, dogs--just more of it in the larger tubes. Took me a while to figure this out. Could have saved myself some bucks along the way.

Um Yes her tail was and is functional. she can still lift it a lil and puff it out.. when she was little and i was new to this whole raising a squirrel thing. She tried jumping off the bed and my dad had dogs and cats so i panicked and in the haste of the moment i grabbed her tail with broke the tip and thats where she chews it now... she still wont let it heal.. anyone know if bitter orange or bitter apple will keep her from chewing it.... she just chews bandages off -- the REVOLUTION do i need to do it more than once

    and thanks guys

A one time dose should take care of the mites (if there are any). Keep bedding clean, however.

Bitter apple or orange stuff have been tried by me and also by NaturesGift without any luck, her thread:

It seems, then there is a wound on the body, they cannot keep from licking and chewing. Once you can keep cone-ecollar on and tail heals, i am pretty sure chewing on the tail will stop.
Like my girl Mia, if there is a wound or crack on her skin, she keeps expanding it and only ecollar helps!!
    Check her wound thread:

    http://www.thesquirrelboard.com/foru...ad.php?t=16352

You should manage to put that ecollar on. Then you can get the mite problem fixed. But to get there, you should stop her reaching and biting the tail, i.e. ecollar..

    Good luck............................

If I recall, from a previous posting by PBJ, Advantage does nothing for mites. But, it will keep off any fleas.

Everything I have read/heard says Advantage Multi DOES take care of mites.

I am not sure the make up of Revolution, but I called bayer and Advantage is the same ingrediants for dogs and cats also, like PBJ said, bigger tubes only difference ...per Bayer!

I'm not home now, but I previouly cited a medical reference that stated clearly Advantage has "no activity" against mites.
