Default Emergency Preparation: Rehabbing Without Electricity

    Hi everyone,

I realized when we lost our power from Hurricane Ike how life changes drastically as we know it especially when it comes to animal care.

I would like to share some ideas with you for future reference.

We make these ..........and keep them for times like "Ike" with no power: I was going to type it out, but found a website where it was done already:
    http://www.justpeace.org/buddyburner.htm

If you make these in advance, and keep them in a safe place with matches..........you can use this to warm up your formula's and other fluids that need warming.

When we make the buddy burner we cut long strips of cardboard, the same height as the can we are using. We begin rolling the strip until it fits nice and snug into the can. Then we pour our liquid wax all over it until it's well saturated.

Now something we picked up along the way while camping out in the cold is.........using rocks instead of rice ..........rock buddies!

Using your buddy burner, or campfire, or bbq warm up smooth rocks. (Wise to have these on hand as without power it's hard to go looking for this!!) Warm up the rocks to your preferred temp and place them inside a double pair of socks. They hold heat a nice long time! You can also use bricks if that's all you have. Be sure to test on your skin on and off for a bit to be sure it's not too hot. (putting them outside chills them down as does cold water)

If you have a bbq, instead of blowing your fuel, put your buddy burner on top of your coals and place what you are heating on the grill. (Make sure you don't put your liquids in anything that has plastic or plastic handles! You can always use other tin cans that are clean.) You can put your rocks in a tin foil pan to keep them clean as they warm above your burner as well.

Having no power does NOT mean you can't make heat! Be sure you follow the directions for buddy burners and be safe!

Hope this information can help save lives during power outages!

    Blessings to all,
    Tamar

a special note....do not use river rocks/stones. or rocks that have been in water or very close for long periods of time. They will explode when you heat them.

Just wanted to bump this thread with hurricane season approaching. Now we know how to make heat, but how do we keep stuff cold if there is no ice available?

It is the wrong time of year to buy them, but the chemical heat packs (hot hands) are great. You have to monitor them to make sure you have the right amount of layers between pack and baby, but they are cheap and wonderful. If you cruise places like LL Bean or Cabelas (or their online stores) you will find LARGE ones meant for hunting - some stay hot for 20 hours, many of them are large - like a foot square! I buy as many as I can at the end of each winter season - they are excellent for transporting babies too.

Glad i seen this one we are in the peak of tornado season here in mid Missouri and just had to share this trick.

We had a power outage for about 30 min or so today i plugged Dukes heating pad into one of the big APC battery backups that you would use for your computer it kept it warm and toasty the whole time we were out of power and only used about 1/4 of the battery power so i assume it would last about 2 hours if need be we use the pro 1500 at work they are kinda pricey but im throwing it out there.

A good thing to have on hand is a couple of milk jugs full of water in your deep freezer. We use them in our ice chest while fishing and they stay frozen even in the heat of summer on the boat for about 2 days. Putting them in a smaller ice chest than the 52 quart we use, will make them last even longer.
