View Full Version : Hats off to Mother Squirrels
After the past 4 weeks of caring for the Fabulous 5, I have a great respect for all mother squirrels out there. How they get anything done around the nest is totally beyond me! The Five are changing from day to day so quickly and they are truely WILD! I bought some mixed nuts in the shells and I dumped a bag outside by a tree that the "working Mom "squirrels come down everyday to visit our bird feeders. They collected every nut.....no doubt to bring back to their nests to share with the growing families.
I'm sure this will become a habit for me......to think about the squirrels as much as we think about the birds. But, I love all Five.....and they continue to do well.

Mommy squirrels are the best mommies, especially seeing what those little monsters do to a nipple.

We know how wonderful they are :jump :jump :jump
Each birthing season the Momma Squirrels bring the juveniles down to introduce us to them. They trust us & back off to watch their lil ones learn about a safe area first hand. It is always one of the most moving moments my wife and I share - trust :thumbsup :thumbsup

I'm with you on that Mads, this turned into quite a project.
I've got a posse of 4 that seem to be just a tad younger then yours.
(They've just opened their eyes since the week end.)
I can't take more then one at a time out of the cooler any more.
They would mob me when I'd trying to feed them, and now try to flip the lid off their soft side lunch box nest.
Meantime the pup is body-slamming the door trying to get back in.
Yipping something that roughly translates to:
"Honest Daddy, I just want to sniff their bums"

I'm glad to hear they are doing well!
Marcucco,
Yes, at the moment it seems you and I are living similar lives. My dog so far isn't doing any barking, but he does have to leave the room also. I plan at the end of this week though to take them in a small bathroom we have so they can run around free while I do the hour long feeding. And hopefully, this weekend, I will be able to start constructing a new place for them, as the dog crate is now becoming small quickly.
I'm wondering why Rhapsody's baby Mia died??? I 've been seeing that a few squirrels get into the cute stage of 6-7 weeks and then die all of the sudden....I am starting to feel that the Fab Five are doing so well, and then I read about somebody' else's squirrel and I get nervous again.
