I got 2 chippies and they behave really normal ecept the times they behave REALLY STRANGE:sanp3
links of posted strange behaviours

(plz view these threads cos there are the couses of my questioning..ty:D )

ok now lets see...
they both had a kind of seizures just 2-3 times in these 3 weeks...no seizures from then...
symphtones includded seizures ofc, nails been stuck in my t-shirt,back legs were 'frozen'(um stuck?,...no... like lose but stuck in my clothing...if you understanded me)then they were cold, and about 2 mins later I put em to the nest and they became normal!moved around jumped,ran...
so this was on of the 'StRaNgE SiTuAtIoNs':flash3
may that be a sighn of MBD? or does it just happen normaly for squirrels to sometimes freak out or something?

then they had really tough fights after new year ,blood everywhere, couldn see each other withou a fight , Chewy is the aggresive male chippie who Loves to run in his wheel, has some hair lose on his cheeks, belly, and tail, but didnt run it in this 2 weeks but just slept in his nest and came out for chow, water, bathroom break and a little jump around...
MBD sigh or normal thing in chippies?

I will try get em the full spectrum light but its kinda hard to find it here in Croatia, can try get a light bulb for reptilians, and how to place it and where in cage ?
their cage, any idea where to put it?

hi kimbia....I am no chippie expert and I'm hoping one of our chippie experts will respond to you quickly, but what you are describing does sound like MBD. What is your chippies' diet like? Can you list the foods they regularly eat -- not just what you put in front of them, but what they are really eating. Putting them in direct sunlight or getting the reptile lamp will help....I'm just not sure if it's enough to cure them. Let's hear what their diet is like and we can go from there. :)

ok so heres the diet list:
carot,apple,kale,cabbage(just sometimes),chippie mix(dont give them much),
yoghurt, orange, apricot and peach slices, also put in their water vitamins for rodents with vitamin C,D,E ...and minerals in it, then i give em cuttlefish bone,
blueberry, other berrys ,strawerry(a bit),sometimes mushrooms, hard boiled egg(they dont seem to like it very much )
etc.
cant really think of anything else:thinking
both sleeping atm, they been out of cage for quite a lot, they can jump, run ,climb without any problem as far as I see:dono
chewy still gots that hair loss which he scratches a lot ,...
they didnt have anymore seizures these 2 weeks, they had only 2-3 times never more:dono
is it still a sighn of MBD even that it didnt happen for 2 weeks by now =o?
as far as I can see they have no other problem with moving:thinking
they can eat normaly, I renamber than then when they got the seizure I've tried to give sum apple , they just kinda put it into mouth ,al sleepy , and didnt hold it, and about 5 mns later, after I put them into the nest they turned into litle cuddle fluffy chippies and strated to sleep, then Ive whached them ,and both came out one by one , looking all normal,...

I'm sorry Kimbia but it still reads of them being inbred....seizures are a sign of inbreeding...the coat loss could be a result as well. I've never heard of MBD in Chipmunks. Kay has had hers indoors for years and never had any problems. Another girl called Lyndsey I chat to keeps hers indoors and never has any problems. If they came from a pet shop its very likely they are related....

Hi kimbia sorry to here your having problems , Personally i do not think this is mbd , the symptoms you describe go very closely with those associated with inbreeding , So 2 related chipmunks produced offspring , This is soooooo wrong & can cause seizures , severe fighting & attacking , the fur could also be a sign on this but could poss indicate mites or fleas if you have other pets , If not then i would say its as a result of the inbreeding . Petshop chipmunks are all to commonly associated with inbreeding & unfortunately they dont give a monkeys for the poor animals health , I keep my chipmunks indoors & 1 of my cages is very similar to yours this is kept in the corner of a room , And the other against a wall in the middle , they both receive light & i have never as yet ** touch wood ** had any problems or foresee any either . DO NOT put your chipmunks in direct sunlight on a sunny day or infront of a window on sunny day ! This can be fatal ....

I do think you need to have the chipmunks seen to as they can not carry on like this it is not fair , If you can get them to a vet who deals with chipmunks then please do . Please dont return & buy again from the pet shop or you may face the same problem , May be difficult but try find a proper breeder who will show you them & handle them 1st .

Thank you DizzyMoo and Crazymunk -- I learn something valuable every day from TSB. Now I understand that chippies don't need sunlight the way tree squirrels do (Duh...they live underground half the time.....slaps forehead) and that inbreeding of chippies can cause these symptoms. :thankyou

kimbia I truly hope these problems are at least somewhat treatable in your sweet chippies. They are beautiful.

stripe is really grat doing now:thumbsup
but chewy...:shakehead
he got another seizure today, he didnt come all day from the nest, so I went to have a peek
well it wasnt a real seizure ,but when I got him out his fingers were stuck in my clothes, gave him to sip a little water, he did^^
so then I could take a batter look of him, the bald patches I saw upclose are like he has mites or something, but dont see the fleas...
his tail is kinda all dry and his skin too...
like hes hasnt eaten or drink in days:dono
gave him some apple, he seems to be 'normalizing' now...
his skin is all so dry..
any creame, or homemade medicine that can help his skin :thinking ?

the last pic Ive took 10 mins ago, he was 'sleeping' in the bathroom house
and when I came to see him he was shaking a bit, now I hear him running down for the food dish
does that pic look to you like hes a bit sleepy or something else?

Sorry you're having problems with your sweet Chippies. All you can do is put them on a healthy diet and see if they improve. You could give them a calcium pill to nibble in case it is MBD. It's really hard to know for sure what is wrong, but a healthy diet can't hurt. Hope they're better soon.:grouphug

as I posted in the chipmunk threads ,
chewy has been to the vets, cos of his big fur loss, they didnt know much about it but they gave me eardrops for dogs, which is a unharming medicine acording to them
I put a bit of that cream on him today, he just loovees when I put that on his skin , sort of relaxing xD
then I could pick him up in my hands and have a better look...
the bald patches are spreading:shakehead :sad
I can even see his stripe lines in the skin!!
hes sleeping now after a good meal
I have to get back to the vets in 10 days and say if theres any diference...
I just hope his fur is gona grow back:peace
