I'm very sorry that your baby escaped her cage.
:( I wish that I had some perfect piece of advice to offer,
something that would help you to get back your dear little Ryleigh, right now!
There have been some terrific suggestions made (in your other thread)
and I sure do hope that they will help.
It could take some time, I've read accounts of squirrels returning a couple of days after
intentional or accidental release.
All I can add is to say how sorry I am http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/hh160/MyLittleTrouble/Smiles/heartbroken.gif, I know that I would be frantic, too.

I am sorry you are so upset about Raleigh escaping. :grouphug I am sure she is having a really fun time being a free squirrel even though you weren't ready to release her. Maybe the hardest part was not being able to say good by and preparing her for the world as a good momma does.
Maybe you can sit down in the area you last saw her and just sit on a blanket with some of her favorite foods....just incase she shows back up. It's getting to be feeding time for all the wild squirrels so look for Raleigh...she will problably be scared and will be be the new squirrel on the block being chased by the older dominant ones.
I went through the same senereo last night....I released 2 kidz and had to wait for them to come back to the cage so I could shut the door for the night. I called them and had nuts....along with lots of patiences and a thick jacket!!!! Good thing they reconized my voice...plus they were getting tired from all the free play.
Good luck and try not to worry.....she will be be OK.:grouphug :grouphug

Good Morning :grouphug
Please try not to worry, I had the same thing happen just before Christmas when Squigella was just reaching five months old and after many hours of tears and calling every half an hour ( even in the night time) just as it was getting dusk 2 days later i heard a rustling in my ivy tree outside my house as i looked up there was my little girl arms stretched out to me back legs hanging onto the tree ready to come home, she jumped into my arms smootched me all over my face as if to say mum where have you been :) .
She was very scared and very hungry and so thirsty but so happy to be home, I carried her around for two days in my pocket before she would even venture out to run around the house. Now she is very wary of open doors and windows and will run away as if to say...never again, it proved to me she could not make it outside on her own she just would not cope, if she could have she would just come to visit, but she wanted home!!!
All I will say is keep calling as they do hear voices and recognised mums voice, but i bet she is out there having a ball with so many different foods and friends to meet, she will come back if she cannot manage and I am sure if can manage she will hang around so you can see her just to let you know it is time to go but that she is ok.
Good Luck x x x

Fix her a nice plate of fruits and veggies and sit them under the tree that you saw her go up. Stay close by and watch to see if she comes down.

Does Ryleigh like everyone in your house, or does she have a favorite? My squirrel doesn't have much to do with anyone at my house, but me. Once or twice she has gotten out of the house and gotten on my roof. After she would get tired, she would come and jump on my shoulder for a ride back inside.

That's very exciting news that you saw her!! :crazy :crazy At least you know that your little friend is OK and used her squirrely-skills to find a safe place to sleep. :thumbsup :) And you know that she has something in her tummy.
I know you would much rather she come "home" and sleep at your house, but she will have to decide that she is ready. She might be looking down at you, even when you can't see her. They are so good at blending in with the tree. Squirrels usually can't be seen -- or caught --- unless they want to be. Try not to take this personally -- she is going by instinct. And her instincts are very, very strong to stay in those trees where it is safe.
One of your early posts mentioned that Ryleigh has a jaw or tooth problem. Does your Mom trim her teeth? If so, how often -- and when was the last time? This will help us know whether it is urgent for Ryleigh's health to try catch her -- or whether it is okay to let her choose to be free-in-the-trees.
I'm SO GLAD you saw her -- Thank you, Ryleigh for checking in so we know you are OK out there!!

Sometimes "my" squirrels hide on the other side of the tree from me when they don't want me to see them. Very tricky little guys.
I wouldn't worry about the snow -- it's snowing here, too (I'm on the other side of DC from you), but only supposed to be a little bit. The squirrels don't mind it at all. :)
That's good, I think, that your Mom has not had to trim Ryleigh's teeth. Has she been able to eat nuts OK? Even in-the-shell ones?

How about a Have-a-heart trap with peanuts or peanutbutter inside. Peanuts are like crack to squirrels. They can't resist. You may have to empty out the trap a few times before you get the right one though. Just make sure that you keep a close eye on the trap. the outside squirrels will get VERY stressed in there. you would need to let them out very soon after being caught to prevent too much stress.
I hope you get your baby back. I know I would be worried sick if I lost one of my guys outside too.

My Hunny left in much the same way. She didn't escape from her cage though, she was playing in the tree like she always did and one day refused to come down after a couple of hours. I was NOT ready for her to be gone at all but she decided it was time to live in the squirrel world and not mine. Your little one might feel the same, we know that she's injured and shouldn't be outside but she doesn't know that. She's just doing what nature tells her to do.
I can only tell you what I do when I want to see my Hunny. I take a lawnchair and sit where I can see her tree at 7am or 4pm. Those are the times when she is most likely to be out and about. I put some blueberries around the base of the tree and just wait for her. When I see her I start calling her by name in the baby talk I always used with her. I have pretty good luck seeing her that way. I can't catch her though, only my husband can. She'll run down to my hand but she runs away again. My husband was her person so if he's around during those times she'll come right up to him. Those are the only times we can find her though, I don't know where she goes during the day or at night.

Ryleigh's Sister, I am very sorry but there is nothing anyone here -- or you -- can do right now. A grey squirrel sleeps at night, and your Ryleigh at five months old knows how to find a warm and sheltered tree to sleep in. Please understand: we are very sorry your squirrel escaped when you wanted to keep her as a pet, but there is nothing anyone here can do except send kind words and thoughts your way.

While I totally understand you are frustrated, heartsick and worried, there is absolutely nothing any of us can do to help.
Everyone's given their best suggestion. If she won't come for her favorite foods I'm just really not sure what can be done to entice her.
I'm sorry this has happened, I really feel for you, but honestly, it's out of our hands.
I'd leave food for her where you last saw her and hope that her squirrely instincts take over.

Post... but pick ONE place and post there so that people can find your thread and follow the story.

Ok guys, if i get Ryleigh back she had this problem-but i dont know if she still does or not- She always bit guests and everyone else except me and my mom. well sometimes but still. Do all squirrels do that? Its just with everyone else.......????

It's not uncommon at all for squirrels to bite people who are strangers to them. In fact, much like parrots, they tend to be one person "pets".
I had visitors today. They insisted on seeing Scooby. I warned them I had no way of really knowing what she'd do but that, to date, the only one who's been bitten is ME (that was a misunderstanding of course). Anyhow, Scooby was fine. She didn't want to go to them, but she didn't attack them either.
I do think if they had reached for her she would have been upset. She did run up one ladies leg, sniffed her a bit and then ran to me.
P.S. the power comes with age and wisdom. I've got the age but some folks would dispute the wisdom part.

Pretty much, yes -- that's very typical. Squirrels usually are one-person pets, sometimes two-person. They don't trust anyone else, so they tend to bite. That's one reason why squirrels don't normally make such good pets -- it's very hard to have a real life with them around, have friends and family come to your house, etc. It may also be Ryleigh's way of telling you that she wants to be a wild, "outside" squirrel.
Try to get some sleep tonite -- I'm sure Ryleigh is curled up fast asleep someplace. :Love_Icon

If Ryleigh isn't coming to you, then the only other alternative is to trap her with a Havaheart trap. Since you've spotted her, that's a good start of where to bait the trap. If you catch the wrong squirrel, just let it go, and rebait.
If you are not in a position to trap her, you could alternatively put up suitable housing for her in the tree in which you've spotter her. Ask your apartment complex manager if you can hang a squirrel box for a small squirrel that is out in the weather. Then all you would need to do is make sure she has plenty of food each day at the bottom of the tree.

really? where could i get this trap? i dont think she came to me because she mightve not gotten to smell my scent to see if it was me-otherwise she mightve come. she was probably too scared:dono

You can get a Havaheart trap and Home Depot or Lowe's near the lawn treatment/bug treatment section. They are easy to set, and squirrels will go right in for some tastey sunflower seed. Good luck.

thank u. how does it work? do they just go inside and it closes?:thinking
atlantasquirrelgirl
02-20-2008, 09:26 PM
That's exactly how it works. It has a door that closes behind them. You put a little seed outside the door, a little inside the door, and then some on the trigger/plate. When then get to the plate and touch it, the door closes behind them. Then you have Ryleigh back.
You want to keep an eye on it while it's out. If you catch the wrong squirrel, just open the door and let the squirrel go. You don't want to leave a wild squirrel trapped in it for a long time because they will be scared.
After you have Ryleigh back, you can resell the trap on Ebay to get some of your money back.

I use them all the time. I just caught a sick squirrel 3 weeks ago with mine. I had it trapped in 30 minutes of putting out the trap, but sometimes it could take a couple of hours.
I actually have 2 traps, one is on loan to a friend with a squirrel in the attic. :)

Here is a piece of advice that if you follow will help find your squirrel.
Take a lawn chair outside and park yourself from about 7am-4pm.
Chances are pretty good you will see your squirrel.
You however have probably missed him over and over by being in the house.
You just have to sit and have patience.:wahoo

I havent seen ryleigh yet today. theres a forest pretty far behind our apartment. maybe she went there to make her nest and comes back for food? i dunno :dono
Mrs. Jack
02-21-2008, 05:56 PM
I bet she did. Squirrels are way smart, they're born with instincts.. nothing will stop them. I bet she's found herself a little hole in a tree, or some leaves and made herself a nest. And yes, leave food out for her, give her a hand. You could also put out the lint that's in your dryer trap, that'll give her some fluff to line her nest with.
Thing with squirrels is.. when they leave mama, they leave.. it is the way they are made. it doesn't mean they don't love us or that we did something wrong. they are just following the pull they feel inside of them. that's the hardest part of being a human squirrel mama, is letting it happen. It is what the word "bittersweet" was invented for.

02-21-2008, 06:11 PM
If you have a forest behind you, that is probably where she is. She would be building a nest, doesn't mean she won't come back to visit if she knows there is food around.
Mrs. Jack
02-21-2008, 06:13 PM
She may. But you need to know that she may not. but that that doesn't mean you all didn't do a good job, it means you did the best job. I know you love Ryleigh, I do to just from seeing and hearing about her. but you must not be assuming the worst, you have to see what a gift you gave her.

Theres supposed to be a big snow storm tonight and we might be snowed in. Im worried -as always. We might get the cage tonight and a bird feeder with nuts in it, and put the cage by the feeder. also, put the rope up and make her cage warm. Think her instincts will lead her back? she may not survive and freeze......... *sniff*

I've seen squirrels.. even the little bitty ones, through rain sleet ice and snow and am amazed at how well they do. that's part of what I admire about them is they are so incredibly strong smart and adaptable. I think your Ryleigh will not only live, but thrive. I think someday soon you'll see some wee bitty squirrels running amok making off with your nuts, and those will be your baby's babies.

I know you do. and for you, I hope she does.. and you know, putting the cage and rope and food and your presence out gives her that possibility. It is also possible that she'll try her hand at being free, but if she NEEDS you, she knows where you are, and that's a lovely thing for a squirrel, I call them best of both world squirrels. Just don't think her not coming back is a rejection. because it is not. What she has given you is priceless, this love of a species many others overlook in their daily lives. you'll always have that, and I'm willing to bet you'll do something with it. I think we have a future rehabber or exotic vet on our hands.. so get to learning!

Jessie I have raised and released many baby squirrels. A couple of summers ago I released a set of 4 brothers, and after a few weeks they didn't visit for several months. Then all of a sudden, one day, one of them was on my back deck. He had been gone for months, but he came back to his human home to visit and eat. He came most every day for a long time and then he left again. But he remembered me. It took a couple of weeks, but Boomer starting trusting me again and would let me pet him a little. God made squirrels very smart and with incredible instincts. I wouldn't be at all surprised if you see her with babies of her own one day. You did a good job, sweetie.

Hope your feeling better today!! All your friends at tsb are thinking of you & Rileigh. I am POSITIVE she is out exploring the big beautiful world & when she truly needs you she will come for a visit. Keep putting fresh healthy foods out for her & if you do see her stay calm, baby talk her & let her come to you. If she does not crawl onto you she is just having too much fun on her own. Thats the fact about being owned by a squirrel---they make up the rules!!:) :)

Love Squigella & Amanda

Ryleigh's Sister.... Please don't be sad. Your baby is just fine... I know it's hard to believe that such a tiny thing could survive, even in the snow, BUT you need to remember... Squirrels ( especially ones from your area!) are built for this kind of weather... Listen to folks like Mrs. Jack, they know what they are talking about. I agree, you would be amazed at how these little guys can not only live but thrive in this kind of weather... I know it's hard hearing everyone tell you "not to worry" but you need to believe that. The folks here on TSB are very straight forward and WOULD tell you if your little pal was in danger... They aren't just trying to make you feel better. Combined, I would bet there are years and years of squirrel experience. If they say baby will be ok, THEN BABY WILL BE OK! I can guarantee you that baby is off exploring her options. Squirrels are naturally curious by nature but they seem to have a sence of what they can and can not do. No squirrel would ever put themselves in danger. Tonight I will say a prayer for your baby to be safe and happy. Please don't be sad if baby's decision is to not come home because you have given her the strength to now build a family. I would bet when she spotted those woods a big smile came over her because know she knows there are other squirrels out there not to mention all of those tall pretty trees. We as humans have a hard time letting go but if you read some of the stories throught TSB you will see MANY happy endings after people got up the courage to let there little loved ones go free... You never know though , maybe after she is done exploring she just might come back to see you... Either way, be strong and proud because you gave her the chance she needed... Thank you for being such a good person!
