I found two baby pinky squirrels on Sunday. I looked up info on the net on how to care for them, and everything had been going great. They were sucking formula and using the bathroom like they sould. For my lunch time feeding one of the babies was very unresponsive and weak. It did not each much or use the restroom. I need to know what to do.

Do you have the babies on a heating pad?

Please provide a little more info on how you started their care.
Do you have them on a heat source?
Did you warm them before hydrating them them?
Did you hydrate them before beginning forumla?
What are you feeding them currently, and what is your mixing ratio.
What are you feeding them with?
When feeding, were there any bubbles in the nose?

I know it's a lot of questions, but will help in determine what is going on.

hi and :Welcome

thanks for saving the babies! some of the following might be repetitive, but PLEASE read it and make sure you're on the right path:

- babies must be kept on heating sources at all times. NEVER hydrate or feed a cold baby. a heating pad beneath a box set on LOW with no automatic shutoff would work. or a hot water bottle wrapped in an old t-shirt (but make sure it stays warm). a snuggle safe is also great (found at most pet stores, meant for cats- you microwave them and they stay hot/warm for hours).

- babies need bedding, but be careful- do NOT use towels! towels have loops and loose threads that can strangle babies. old t-shirts, fleece bits, and a little paper towel would make fine bedding.

- once the babies are warm, find a 1 cc syringe and offer them warm pedialyte or water. never force a pinky; they may not like it at first, but soon thirst will convince them.

- call a rehabber. i understand, i truly do, that you are probably a competent, caring person, and for that i thank you. but the best chance these babies have for survival is in the hands of a rehabber- second best to their real mother. a rehabber has experience, resources, and the law at their disposal, and they will raise these babies with love and care until they're ready to be released. please consider this.

now for questions;

what have you been feeding them?
do they have any fur at all?
are there any visible injuries on them?
have you been stimulating them to go pee and poop?
what does their poop look like?

it would be wonderful to get a picture of these little ones. thanks again for saving them!

Thanks for all the posts. When I got home from work yesterday the baby that was in trouble had died, but I found a rehabber close to me and I brought the other one to her. She said that he sould be fine. So thanks again for taking the time to try to help these little babies.

I PMd Lana today, and got this answer......

"Thanks anyway but I found a rehabber in Kenner LA. When I got home from work yesterday one had died, so I brought the other one to the lady in Kenner so she could properly take care of him. I believe she aspirated her milk, and would have needed the meds. The good news is that the little boy is very strong and will probally survive."

I knew ya'll would all want an update on the pinkies. It's good to know that the boy seems strong, and that she was wise enough to get them to a rehabber.
