Teyla (about 2 years old) is eating less and pooping less. Her poos are also smaller than usual. This started last night. I think she may have a hairball...I ran out and got the only hairball remedy I could find - "Peter's Premium Rabbit Products RABBIT LAX - Hairball & Obstruction Remedy for Rabbits, Helps eliminate and prevent hairballs."
Ingredients:
Petrolatum, Malt Extract, Molasses, Cod Liver Oil, Soybean Oil, Tocopheryl Acetate
What do you think?

It's basically vaseline, with some other stuff added to make it taste good, plus some things to make her go potty. I know vaseline is recommended for kitties with hairballs.

you've checked teyla over, I assume. she's not impacted or anything? the only reason I ask is because this happened to my guinea pig.

I'm a bad bunny mom and don't know how to tell if she is impacted! Will she be not squishy if she is?
TexanSquirrel

She is squishy. Not happy about being squished, but still, she is squishy.

I use to give my bunny...the stuff you give to kitty's..for thier hair balls...it always worked out good..and they willingly licked it off of my finger!:thumbsup

I know it's basically Vaseline, that's why I'm kind of O.O on feeding it.
She's my little hay muncher, thank goodness. She has also been drinking well. She's been her usual self, coming out to play, hopping around, trying to bite me for grooming her...

This started last night, sorry. I'm having trouble keeping track of what I've said on which forum.

So should I give the Rabbit Lax or not? Would it hurt if she doesn't really need it?

You're so funny, TS. Like me, you're very sensible as long as it's not one of YOUR babies that's sick....then you lose it! The obvious answer is to give her the medicine. And if she's no better in a day or so.....off to the vet!
Hope she's better soon!:grouphug

It's not so much "is she squishy" as "is she swollen?" "is she pooping when you push, but unable to expell it on her own"? the main worry would be if she is swollen in any way. I do not think the meds will hurt, just give the smallest dose and see what happens :)
TexanSquirrel

The only rabbit vet I can find is the same one that half-neutered Teal'c! :soapbox :soapbox :soapbox
She does not appear swollen. She can make poops on her own, there are just fewer and they are smaller.

Thanks for your help guys. I'm signing off now. I will keep you posted on how she is tomorrow.
TS what does her diet look like?? I have a bunny vet book and will do some looking for you when I get home.

lol I was going to sign off but then I saw Mars was on and decided to wait for her input.
She gets all the fresh, high-quality timothy hay she wants, 50 grams of pellets per day (timothy hay based), and fruits/veggies every couple of days.
The bunny forum has helped me come up with a new diet that includes less fruits (too much sugar) and more leafy greens to be given every day. But it will take a while for that to become her new diet. I don't want to upset her tumtum.

:Love_Icon hope you're both feeling better tomorrow. :Love_Icon
Okay here is what I came up with. Replace your bunnies water for the time being with pedilyte and encourage her to drink. Otherwise she will need SQ fluids from the vet. Pineapple juice contains the enzyme bromelain and will help break down the mucus that binds the hair. Up to 10 ml can be given 3 times a day. A cat laxative can be given 30 mins after the pineapple juice. the dose is 3ml twice a day. Leafy greens should be offered, especially those of the laxative plants such as dandelions. That is the total of do at home advice the rest would need a vet. :D
Prevention is a high fiber diet of good grass hay and a reduced pelleted ration. An Adult bunny should get a 1/4 cup of timothy pellets per 5lbs of body weight per day. All the grass hay they can eat and 1 cup fresh greens daily per every 3 pounds of bunny. Fresh fruits can be given daily but should be less than 2 tablespoons for bunnys over 5 pounds and less than 1 tablespoon for bunnies under 5 pounds. Bunnys are best fed twice a daily, morning and evening. Beyond diet increased exercise will keep things moving. :crazy
Bet most of this you already known but I hope this helps.:)
PS most of this is from this book

Best bunny book ever.:D

lol hazel, that was the exact same article we were discussing on the bunny board! Good find!
Mars - both Teal'c'n'Tey get pineapple juice every month. Ten mL a day for 3-5 days. Going to make 'tasty water' after getting off here...Picking up leafy greens tomorrow.
Rabbit Lax appears to be working, as Teyla has made a couple regular size poos. Just a couple though. She has become highly aggitated with me, as she hates grooming and prolonged petting. :( Who knows what her previous owner did to her...
Teal'c is extremely jealous as Teyla has gotten both her playtime and his. Will be staying up late(r) tonight so he can have his turn. Otherwise he will sit there and express his displeasure by tearing up his cardboard flooring. Again. :shakehead (Teal'c, you think you've been cheated? The poodle is locked up in the closet so you guys can hop around. That's cheated.)
*Poodle is locked up because if he's not in my room by the time the parents go to bed little demons take over his mind and he starts tearing things up. Such a strange little family I have here....
Me: OMG BUNNY HAIRBALL MUST COUNT AND MEASURE POOS!
Teal'c: I got a shelf, neenerneenerneeeeener! I got a shelf! neenerneenerneener! I can be up, down, up, down, up...."
Teyla: Freak. I'm going to go bite the human now for digging in my poopoo box.
Poodle: Just because I pee and poo and chew things up when the parents go to bed does not mean I should be punished! I am a POODLE! I deserve better!
BinkyBinky!Teyla. I think this is a good sign.
Hopefully tomorrow, everything will be back to normal. The buns will have both gotten their time to play by the time the poodle comes in, I won't be hunting for treasure, and the poodle will be back on his (bright pink) satin sheets. :skwredup

lol You guys are funny. I gave her a 3/4 dose of Rabbit Lax last night. This morning there were some normal sized poos but for some strange reason they were not in her potty box. That is unusual for her....
Also, she is not eating as much as I think she should....Maybe it gave her a tummy ache?
Hopefully I will get out of class early today and can get home to her in time to decide my next course of action before the vet closes....
