mjs Hi everyone, I have a squirrel that I raised and released. found him as a 6week old. he's almost 2 years old now. beginning in the summer his tail was bushy then I noticed it was getting shorter and it looked like a dark rough stick on the end. about 3inches. then 4-5 inches ,with no hair on it. then the stick part must have fallen off and now it looks as if he has half a tail. I'm worried a bit that the winter is coming. will he be warm enough with just half a tail??. He made it through last winter and I feed him (and his new friends) everyday. squirell mix and peanuts. I will be attempting to make a few squirrel houses this next week, does anyone have any comments on this. Should I be doing anything about this tail situation?, and do you think he'll be okay over the winter, I live in Pa, and it's just starting to get cold at night again. thanks for your help, Cathy

Don't worry, he'll do just fine :) My Zag lost more than half her tail, and Stubby I never saw with a full one from the start, nor bunny. and they're just as squirrelly as everyone else :thumbsup

thanks Mrs. Jack. I wasn't sure if it was his diet, maybe he was missing something as a baby... or if he has some kind of infection. that I should try to catch him and treat. I haven't held him since he was a baby. but I do talk to him everyday and he takes peanuts by hand, he's very sweet.

Something got him and bit it off most likely.. could even have been another squirrel. but the dark stick was the dead piece, Zag had the same thing. Long as it heals with no infection which it did, then he'll do fine, and be unique :D I always put fluff and stuff out in fall for anyone who wants it, so houses and stuff sure will be welcome to them all :thumbsup

It's fairly normal, Squriels have a notch on there tail so it need be it can fall off. As long as it dosent seem infected he should fine!Good luck!
