I want to trap some squirrels and eventually turn them loose here in our area. We currently have one lonesome squirrel that comes around and I feed him very well.....
CAn I trap other squirrels now (getting on in fall), and would I have to keep them in a cage with a house to keep them warm and then turn them loose later this winter or early spring? Would they then stay around?
Will they get along if I trap some until I can turn them loose?

Hello Sue,
I really do not think you should trap and house squirrels to have them in your yard, or to keep another squirrel company. Squirrels are territorial and that could cause all kinds of problems.
If one squirrel found you, then more are sure to follow him or her and you will have more the "natural way" :)
If you keep putting out food, they will come!
The number of squirrels in your back yard is dependant upon the food supply. Increase the amount of food outside and they will come. :)

adult wild squirrels don't need to be 'housed' they do that all on their own :)
squirrels don't get "lonely" per se. they get together when they mate, but other than that, they tolerate each other. they're not a pack animal, I know you see lots at a park or something similar, but that's them tolerating each other because they get food. my wilds tolerate each other. and beat each other up mightily doing it.
LOTS OF FOOD=LOTS OF SQUIRRELS. Think of it like the "field of dreams" movie- if you feed them, they will come...
I love how much you seem to love squirrels.. but it's not something you can force, enjoy the one you have and I bet eventually you'll begin to see more.

Instead of trapping and relocating squirrels that already have homes. Why don't you check and see if there are any squirrel rehabbers in your area and see if they could use a new and safe place to release their rehabbed squirrels. That would be a win, win situation.

that's a great idea. I know how we all get worried hoping when they're released they'll be safe, how dandy would it be to have an open heart and yard waiting for them?:thumbsup

Trapping wilds to try to relocate them would just be cruel. You could be taking mommas away from their babies and babies away from their mommas.

Just look what happened when I started feeding them sunflower seed! I couldn't hardly find a squirrel when I first moved into my house.
