Hi, One week ago, I found a baby southern flying squirrel. I've been carrying him around in my bra and feeding him puppy milk and grapes. He appears (from a checklist I found online) to be 6-8 wks. old. I also read I should either release him BEFORE Nov. 1, or keep him at least for the winter. I just don't know what I'm getting into if I keep this squirrel for a pet. What kind of maintenence he will require. I hear good and bad stories. I didn't CHOOSE him as a pet, but he did run right up to my feet and look at me in my back yard. I think I was the chosen one! Any input would be helpful. I mean, I don't really know what to feed him, or anything. He is very healthy, though, and sweet. I think he and I are getting attached to each other! Advice, anyone???? HELP Ginger, Chas. SC

As a Sugar Glider owner of three gliders...... I say - Keep Him - you will be greatly rewarded for your kindness and they do make wonderful pets no matter what you have heard and they do not require as much time & care as some people would have you believe.
If you have not done so, please check out The Flying Squirrel Board..... NFSA

If you have been carrying it around that much it is probably already bonding to you.
Definately check out the NFSA board for advise in the educational section. YOu willfind info in diet, bonding, cages, etc there.
I wouldnt release it this winter. I think it would be too young to survive, find a colony, etc.

I would suggest not keeping him. If he is mild tempered and not a wild ad mine was it may be possible. However, relasing him another option. If you realese him, most likely he sill come back. Let him go outside slowly, give him some time. When you decided contact me!

if i were you, i'd winter the little guy (or girl) over and decide about release/keep in the spring. that way, you still have the option of letting him go later, but you'll get a taste of the time, money, and energy required to own a squirrel.
pictures! :D
