I think the time has come for us to trim Max's nails since he will not be released and he is shredding most of my body to pieces.

Can someone please give me a LINK to a website that explains the nail trimming procedure well?

I have clipped the nails of my dogs & sugar gliders, so I assume the procedure is done some where in between the two -
wrap the squirrel up like a little burrito and make sure the nail is not cut to short as to not cut into the quick.

If you think it is going to stress Max out too much, you might want to give him a drop of Bach's Rescue Remedy first, to calm him down. :thumbsup

Where can I buy this Bach's Rescue Remedy at? - and what is it usually used for?

:thankyou :Love_Icon :thankyou

Ok - I located it at the Drug Store I use on line thru my Insurance Company..... it is similar to Valerian Root, which I use from time to time - to help relieve anxiety and stress.

You should be able to find Rescue Remedy at any health food store. Simply put 3 drops in your squirrel's water that day.

Clipping often leaves nail a bit ragged and actually more likely to cause scratches than before. You may want to consider using a nail file to smooth them down.

I will give that a try first...... and believe it or not, I have actually seen Emory Boards for Animals at the pet store - :tilt

I have never had to trim my flyer's nails. I have used an emory board though. Actually, the flyers like to play tug-o-war with it and it accomplishes the same thing....LOL

HEY! - I just thought about this...... :thinking

I use this Wodent Wheel for my Sugar Gliders with a nail trim pad inserted into the wheel for trimmimg the nails... Would it work for squirrels (or) do they not use a wheel?

I have Stealth Wheels for my flyers and can get TrimTrax for them. It is designed in a way that only the tips of their nails get on the TrimTrax so the pads of their feet dont get sore. I dont know about greys, reds, etc, but flyers love the Stealth Wheels.

I you are planning on letting him go, do not trim his nails. If you are keeping him as a pet it may or amy not be a good idea.

Max became unreleasable after having problems with his left paw that ended in him loosing three nails...... and we just trimmed his nails up the other night and he is a much more welcomed squirrel now - as far as the human body is concerned - :thumbsup :thumbsup

Rachel fights me pretty good when it comes time to trim her nails, but it's over in probably three minutes and then she sulks for about 10 minutes.

Some squirrels DO run on a wheel. I have an Ultimate Wheel by Leo Braun for Rachel and she hauls a$$ in it! At other times she just lays in the bottom with her arm dangling down. So cute! :)

Out of curiosity....do folks ever use a dremel for their squirrel's toes? It makes doing my dogs so much faster and easier. Of course, one would want to be sure those long, bushy tails were tucked safely out of the way :crazy

Isn't that some sort of hand held tool? - exactly how does it work?

Its like those thing they use on people nails in the nail salons. I'd be very careful with it. Seems it might take a squirrels nails down so fast you might go to far. And it will get hot too.
I know I wouldnt try it with the flyers.
Good idea for the dogs though!

It is a hand held tool- mine is cordless. For dogs, I use one of the sanding wheels. It can get hot very quickly, so I only do a 3-5 seconds per nail and just keep rotating through one paw. If the nails have gotten long (my one girl grows nails overnight), I will use a clipper and then the dremel to smooth the edges. Mine also has 2 speeds- I use the slower speed for the dogs.

I asked about using it for the squirrels because my avian vet uses it sometimes for the toe nails of my birds and when I got my re-homed Blue and Gold Macaw, his beak was overgrown and it was used to grind that back as well.

Anyway,.... I saw another response had come in suggesting that it might not be appropriate for squirrels, so it might not be such a good thing to try~:dono

Oh I just dont think it would work for flyers. I dont know about other squirrels. It would depend on how tough their nails are I guess. Not having any kind other than flyers, Im no judge....LOL

Thanks for all your advice on nail trimmimg. I have had my squirrel for about a month or so. She fell out of the neighbors tree before her eyes were open, and some cat was trying to maul her.
Anyway, I love holding her, but her nails are so sharp. She is so quick that she shreds me up! I will try the Bach's Rescue Remedy and a nail file for now. I think the sound of a dremel will scare her.

Was looking for this subject matter, sure enough I find it! :thumbsup

With my being Anne's favorite tree exerciser I'm being shredded like
a stalk of celery in a food processor! Think I'll attempt the filing first, do the hind feet/nails need filing also? :thinking
