Jacob and Wilhelm have become rather vicious with the syringe, and I can't seem to control the flow much any more. They are literally sucking the plunger down themselves. Is this ok and if not is there some way to keep them from doing that? *sigh*

You don't want them sucking it as fast as they want. They will get overeager and suck too fast and aspirate. Try putting your thumb on the side of the plunger near the syringe to stop it from sliding so fast.

Thanks...I will do that :)

HEY! don't you dare leave! :D we're here to help you!
any question at all is welcome- you could visit the nursery and create a thread all for these two, and keep us updated. we can advise you well in this process!
as for the formula, their eagerness to eat is probably the reason why they became overfed- babies do NOT know when they are full at this age.
what do they weigh? how much (and how often) do you plan on feeding them?
silverdragoneast
10-15-2007, 06:41 PM
Well, I do not let them eat till they stop...They have always gotten 6ml (and only 6ml) of formula since I got them Friday. I don't know their weight, but they have their eyes closed still, but are furry all over, so I thought 4 week old?
When I got them I had to keep waking them up during feeding, and now they eat with a passion, which I am assuming means they are feeling better. I am hoping to get a video at their 8:30pm feeding and post it here so you can see.
I am glad there are people who are willing to help with this new experience :)
I read in the "Life Threatening Help Needed" section that most squirrels that are found die within 2 weeks...that is so scary :(
I am going to redouble my efforts to find a rehabber asap...Jacob and Wilhelm deserve the best chance they can have. They have been through enough without having to rely on a newbie.
I have raised kittens and puppies from birth successfully...but this is a whole new ballgame.

that's wise of you to consider. we do help people raise squirrels themselves, but their best chance of survival is in a licensed rehabber's hands.
would you like help in finding a rehabber? we have some excellent sources and search engines you can try.
in the meantime, 6 ccs how often? i'm trying to figure out why the one became constipated....does the other one poo well?
also, about this explosion, were they thrown any distance, or were they just near the heat?
TS I think they were constipated from dehydration.
thundersquirrel
10-15-2007, 07:19 PM
ahh....that would explain it. the white in their poo as well, though? it sounded like they weren't digesting, which made me think overfeeding, but maybe it didn't digest due to dehydration?

I read in the "Life Threatening Help Needed" section that most squirrels that are found die within 2 weeks...that is so scary :(
That statistic is so bad because most found babies are pinkies, which have a higher mortality rate, and because many people don't follow the advice on TSB, or find us too late, or either can't or won't get to a vet or rehabber quickly enough when things go wrong. If you can avoid those mistakes, your chances are much better. You are certainly making a great effort!

Being somewhat older babies, your guys have a much better chance. The only thing working against them is their injuries.
I believe the biggest mistake people make is not realizing how delicate baby squirrels are. They have some simple and basic needs, but those must be met, exactly, and at all times, or they die: they need to be WARM at all times, completely REHYDRATED, and fed the right formula, the right amount, at the right intervals, at the right temp, using the right method. We have babies die from overfeeding more than underfeeding.
It might help if you could choose one thread to post on, so people can easily see the whole story. That will help TSB help you.
Are they going to get the burns treated by a vet? Not that I'm saying they have to be treated--we don't get many squirrels with burns, so we're all learning here. Also, did you get the info on basic squirrel care? More pics always help too. The rehabbers can often spot problems that you might not be able to see.
I think you're doing a great job; you obviously care a lot and you're trying as hard as you can. Bless you for that! :grouphug

Sorry, was reading about "Sunshine" on the Nursery board...did "Sunshine" ever go to Squigglesmom??
I feed them every 4 - 5 hours.
Do you want to tell me where to take all this so I can keep the story together?? Can these threads be moved to one thread?
I would LOVE help finding a rehabber :)
They need to be released when old enough, but I can't release them here due to 2 outdoor cats :(

Hang on, Silverdragon. Someone will help you find a rehabber. However, there is no guarantee that one will be available. Georgia isn't a very squirrel-friendly state. Has anyone walked you through the basics via Private Message or Chat?

Oh, the vet was VERY pleased with the way their burns were healing, and encouraged me to keep using the neosprin plus on them. He said that if the skin were to crack or open on any of the burned areas, to come back and get some antibiotics for them to keep off infection.
(One of his staff is also raising 2 squirrels, and he teased me that he was going to send his 2 home with me lol)

so glad the burns are healing- though silvadene would be a little better than neosporin.
here is a link to find a rehabber in georgia;

are any of those near you?
silverdragoneast
10-15-2007, 07:37 PM
No, those are all north GA, around the Atlanta area. Atlanta is 5 hrs from me :(
I am near the FL border though, is there one near the FL boarder?
I wish I could remember the one in Thomasville, she is only 45 min from me...I will check the local vets offices tomorrow and see if they know.

it's alright SDE. i think we have them stable enough at this point that they can wait a day in your care.
just so you all know, i've PMed SDE about hydration- we've decided to continue pedialyte hydration until we're certain the poops are back to normal and are regular. we believe this will help the burns heal, as well.
