Peanut and Nutmeg are now 7-8 weeks old. They are getting so big. We bought a new cage yesterday. It's a three level "penthouse" with plenty of room to run and jump. They were a little nervous at first but warmed up to it pretty quickly. Lots for them to explore. They jumped and climbed the sides and just played for hours! They seem to love it. I have to pry them out to give them their formula. And as soon as they are done, they willing jump back into the cage. They used to want to hang out with me for a bit but now if I don't put them back in soon enough they literally jump from me to the top of the cage. The doors have locks so it takes me a minute to open them. They have no patience and want back in now!!! I bought them a nesting ball (has anyone used these?) and they love it!! They climb in it to sleep. When they aren't sleeping in it, they climb on it and roll around. Hilarious to watch. I also bought them a ferret hammock and a new soft toy. They don't seem to have much interest in either one unfortunately. I thought they would be so cute to watch in the hammock.
We are working on eating solid foods. I cut the formula feedings down to four a day on Friday. I have been giving them one half of a shelled pecan a piece every day for a few weeks now. Have also been giving them the zupreem for a few weeks now but they don't seem to like it much. We tried grapes last week but after the choking incident I haven't gave them any more of those evil things. Tried boiled egg twice last week. They nibbled but seemed to ignore that as well. I gave them bits of orange on Saturday but they didn't seem to care for that either. We tried avacado yesterday and they loved it. I put about 12 small pieces in their dish and they ate all but three. I keep a steady supply of the rodent block, zupreem blocks, and cherrios in another dish. They nibble on them but don't seem to be eating much.
So I guess I'm wondering how much they should be eating and if I'm doing this right. Any and all advice would be appreciated. I want healthy happy squirrels!
P.S. Their new cage is big but still small enough that I can move it outside. We're going to take our first visit out today. Supervised of course.
