Hello! I have a five week old baby with very stinky pee, he weighs 117 grams and I have either Clindamycin hydrochloride 300mg or Cephallexin monohydrate 500 mg both capsule form. Will either of these suffice, and if so could somebody possibly give me dosage info? I'd greatly appreciate it!

Hi TanyaGray and welcome to The Squirrel Board!
Thank you for your care and love for this baby Squirrel! I am sorry that it took so long for you to receive answers to your questions!
What is the name of your Squirrel!
Do you have experience raising a baby Squirrel?
How long have you had this baby and how did you happen to get him?
Are your Squirrel's eyes open yet (usually a 5 week milestone)?
What is your Squirrel's diet (formula)? Is he active, eating and drinking normally?
Has your Squirrel had any antibiotics before and is so, what were they and why were they given?
Does the urine smell right after it was released or does the urine develop an odor after sitting for a while?
Just so you'll have it; here is a link to Henry's Pets Guide to Baby Squirrel Care; https://www.henryspets.com/1-baby-squirrel-care-guide/
There are 6 pages of very good advice!
Of the two antibiotics listed, I would recommend using the Cephalexin for a number of reasons. Clindamycin is NOT ordinarily considered for treating the average UTI as there are more appropriate and safer medications available! Also, oral use of Clindamycin can result in profound diarrhea and a particular for of inflammation of the large bowel and because of these potential very serious problems; a number of Exotic Animal Formularies have recommendations AGAINST using Clindamycin orally for any reason!
Cephalexin certainly can be used for treating a presumptive Urinary Tract Infection. Other antibiotics that work well are Cipro and Sulfamethoxazole/Trimethoprim (Bactrim is a brand of this). If you have any other antibiotics, please list them and their strengths!
As soon as I hear back from you, I will send dosing instructions to you by Private Message; either for the Cephalexin or another antibiotic if you have on available that may be a better choice than the Cephalexin although that should be fine! We do NOT post or discuss dosing specifics on the Open Board for a number of good reasons!

Hello to an ADMIN. I would like to ask if you would consider moving this thread to the Non Life Threatening Forum for better exposure!
Thanks!

Thank you for the response!
I've named the baby Rutabaga! He's my first baby squirrel, however I have raised several litters of orphaned kittens from a bottle, so I'm a little bit experienced in feeding, stimulating movements, etc. I've also already downloaded the guide, that's how I found this forum and also how I know that Rutabaga is about 5 weeks old as his eyes just opened two days ago. My neighbor found him in the middle of our road about a week ago, so I've been caring for him since then. He's currently on the diet of espilac with a little bit of heavy whipping cream fed about every 4 hours and he eats very well. He sleeps most of the rest of the time but when it's feeding time he's all over the place, very active! I haven't given him any other antibiotics before, and I can only assume that he's got the UTI due to the strong smelling urine. His bedding smells fishy almost, at first I thought it might have been the formula but I realized that the damp spots in the bedding were stinky pee. He also was shaking his head a bit yesterday which is a little concerning, however he hasn't done it again since. The only antibiotics that I have currently myself are the Clindamycin and cephelaxin however I can ask around the neighborhood, there might possibly be somebody else with something a little bit better though I'd really rather not put off treating him any longer if I don't have to. Do you think I should take the time to look for something more appropriate?
Thanks so much!
