So today was devastating -
I had 2 male babies that we have been nursing since the hurricane. One was smaller and seems to have pneumonia but thriving and growing.
the other was Great - larger and eating well- until today he died suddenly. The only thing I did different was switch to Fox Valley formula -
Last night and this morning I gave them Fox Valley 20/50. All day today I notice Milton (my larger baby) was very lethargic - I tried to give
water in case of dehydration but it was too late... he was already dying. awful.

My other baby seems to be okay - I did not give the 20/50 to him again - too scared to continue with that formula! He on the other hand
has always been smaller and struggles with breathing and clicking noises when breathing - still eating and gaining weight but now, I am
so devastated - I don't want to loose him too.

I cannot get a vet to give me an antibiotic or help- so I saw the posts about the colloidal silver and bought some- what should I give him
he is about 6 weeks old now. I just want him to live!

HELP! Is there anyway to get an antibiotic?

Hi Sherry and welcome to The Squirrel Board! I am very sorry that you have not yet had a response to you Emergency Post! I am at work and will send dosing just as soon as I can (probably within the next 30 minutes). What is you Squirrel's name? Are his eyes open? If so, this would suggest that he is at least 5 weeks and his weight certainly supports this! What did he weight when you found him? Here is a link to Henry's Pets Guide for Baby Squirrel Care. Please read the first 3 pages NOW! It is essential reading. Also, one of the suggestions that has not yet been revised in Henry's Guide is a recommendation for using Fox Valley 32/40. I would NOT use this! Fox Valley 20/50 is an excellent formula however BUT it must mixed it correctly. We'll talk about that later when I have more time and other may be able to comment as well! Also, how much formula/fluids is your Squirrel getting with each feeding and how often are you feeding your Squirrel. This is a calculated amount and Henry's Guide covers this. I will also send a "cheat sheet" to you when I am able. Why do you suspect pneumonia? One of the concerns I have is possible dehydration (I'm not saying that that is the problem but hydration is extremely important and the possibility of dehydration must be considered). I would suggest mixing a teaspoonful of molasses or syrup in a measured cup of very warm but not hot water (around 100 degrees F) and give your Squirrel 8ml of this now but use a 1ml syringe withOUT a needle and give this drop by drop and give your Squirrel time to swallow. Follow the recommendations in Henry's Guide!

Bactrim is not an ideal respiratory medication nut I will send dosing instructions to you as I am able to get another moment at work. Do you have any other antibiotics available or that can be obtained from friends or family. I would also recommend NOT using colloidal silver as it has NO recognized Veterinary or Medical benefit and there are potential problems associated with it! I know that it is seen on TSB and elsewhere but again; I would recommend against using it. At the very best, it would harmless but there is NO potential benefit to using it. We must find out why your Squirrel's behavior has changed! Please describe in detail what you have noticed and again, be very specific about his diet!

I'll get back with you as soon as I can and I will send dosing instructions to your via a Private Message as we do not put dosing instructions on the open board. Again, however, antibiotics are used for infections and there are many other reasons for behavioral changes. Audible clicking is NOT diagnostic of anything and it and every other abnormal sign, should IDEALLY must be evaluated for causation before "jumping" into a treatment! It is best to treat diagnosed conditions if at possible rather than signs of some condition but of course, we unfortunately, we do not always have a definitive diagnosis so treatment of the abnormal sign may be all we have. Again, I will send dosing instructions when I can get back. Ensure that your Squirrel is warm and then adequately hydrated!

Just to clarify, I meant that having multiple threads about the same Squirrel and the same issues makes it difficult to following the events and ensuring continuity, both of which in this type forum are absolutely essential!
