I have a fox squirrel around 12 weeks old. I’ve always cared for multiples in the past. I’m concerned that he will feel lonely/depressed since I will have to overwinter him. He has a cage in the house and a very large one on the front porch where he goes daily. Also, I take him out for “floor time” twice daily. Will he do ok?

I have overwintered six singletons, typically from September to May. With a large cage and play time out of the cage twice a day, they have all done just fine.

I have only raised grey squirrels, so no idea what would be different with fox squirrels.

Having lots to do in the cage is important - climbing, chewing, digging, etc. I provide large containers with dirt and bark mulch so they can dig, bury stuff, etc. Lots of branches to climb on and chew. Fresh green branches every day.

Having the cage near a window so they can see out is helpful. And so long as there are no threats in the house (cats, dogs, etc.) then an open door so they can see into other rooms can be good for them.

All the singletons I have overwintered have enjoyed their play time with lots of climbing all over me, perching, jumping on/off, exploring in my hoodie, etc.

The first two singletons I overwintered were home alone four days a week and were always happy to see me when I got home from work. But since early 2020 I have been working from home exclusively in the same room as their cage, and I do think this helps them quite a bit to have more interaction.
