Hi, I’m so happy to have found this site! Thanks to you all for being here.
I found a little guy after the hurricane in Louisiana on the ground. From what I can tell he is about five or six weeks old. I left him in hopes mom would retrieve him but he was in the same spot the next morning. No injuries or parasites from what I can tell and he is a feisty little thing! He is drinking pedialite but will not eat any of the fruit, veggies, or nuts I have offered.
I am keeping him warm with hot water bottles and a blanket nest in a big box. I also put a few twigs with leaves and acorns hoping it would ease his stress. He must be so hungry so I am going now, to get puppy formula.
Any advice is much appreciated!
Thanks so much

Aw, he is just precious. Can you give him some fleece or some torn up T-shirts to lay in and burrow under?

Get the Esbilac Powdered Puppy Formula - it has a little black, white and brown puppy on the container. Do NOT get the liquid.

Here is an excellent resource - it is 6 quick pages - the arrow to advance to the next page is at the top of the page: https://www.henryspets.com/1-baby-squirrel-care-guide/

Mine loved avocado. You can try giving him some if he's properly hydrated and while you wait to get the Esbilac.

Here is also the link to the baby squirrel guide as a pdf to download, in case you have internet problems because of the hurricane.

Thanks so much for your replies!
He does have a little fleece blanket and I’ll tear up some shirts for him, thanks for the tip)
I’ll definitely get the powder formula, thanks for letting me know. And I’ll be super careful not to aspirate him. I’m nervous but I’ll just go a sloths speed. No advocates unfortunately but I will try that as soon as I can!

Cheers!

P.S. also, I really appreciate the links! Thank you so much

Try to get your hands on a 1ml syringe (no needle required) and use that to feed. The smaller syringes are easier because the chances of aspirating are a lot less. No bottles. For my first squirrel, I went to the drug store and spun a yarn that I was trying to raise a baby guinea pig who's mama had rejected it and they gave me some 1mls.

If you can gather the baby in the fleece, flop a little of it over the face when you feed so he/she doesn't have to look at you (no offense!). Baby will come to know you and you likely won't have to keep doing this but when they are first with you and old enough to be fully sighted they are a bit scary and this can concentrate their attention on eating.

We went to the pharmacy and asked if they could part with a couple of 1cc syringes. They were willing to give us several, and asked for updates on how the squirrels were doing.
