Hello,
I have a 4 year old NR grey squirrel that broke her tooth. I am concerned that it may have lodged into her nasal cavity. Does anyone know of a vet that would be able to help in Northern California? It's challenging finding anyone to treat squirrels since they are considered illegal. Our wildcare center would put her down if I brought her in.

I'm in NorCal East Bay/TriValley/Pleasanton and only have wild squirrels in back yard, no pets.

What part of NorCal are you ?? (ok, if you don'r want to answer)

I know 3 places around Bay Area that might help you:

1) Wildcare, San Rafael
2) Wildlife Center of Silicon Valley (WCSV), San Jose
3) Linsey Wildlife Hospital, Walnut Creek

Many places have recently changed their intake rules for squirrels so PLEASE CALL to confirm their policy. Be careful with getting squirrel to Vet anywhere since you are not licensed. Honestly, this is problem for squirrel care in CA.

Thank you! Wildcare in San Rafael put my first rescue down in 2020. Will never go to them again. They told me they could help after I explained he had a slight malocclusion and needed his teeth trimmed. Our plan was to release him afterwards, but WildCare put him down without telling me. I had to call back the next day to find this out. They said he was too comfortable around people and would not survive in the wild. I don't know how they could say this when they were never around to witness him in the back yard, climbing trees and around other squirrels. Collecting his own food as well.
Needless to say I learned my lesson.

ok, Wildcare is out.

I had Wildlife Center of SV ready to help me with my wild foxer Ms.Mo but I was able to get her well with help from TSB. What I learn from CA rehabbers is that the squirrel must be released in the same area as it was taking from.

Sounds like you need a Vet more than a Wildlife Center. Honestly getting a Vet for a squirrel in CA is difficult.

I don't know anyone in Northern Cal but if you are up for a ride, I sent you an email with contact infor for a mobile vet in SoCal.

Hi Taubert,

Another thought since you are NorCal is going north to Oregon or more east to Sierras or over to Nevada (Reno metro).

In Bay Area, there is also Peninsula Humane Society (recent investment from Larry Ellison/Oracle) and they expanded to South Bay (Saratoga) and have merge with the Wildlife Center of Silicon Valley (San Jose). PHS is now 3 locations in the Bay.

Another option to search is CA Dept of Fish and Wildlife database:
link: https://wildlife.ca.gov/Conservation/Laboratories/Wildlife-Health/Rehab/Facilities

Possibly you could make connection with local Rehabber who would help for a drop-in visit.

Lastly, UC-Davis Vet School is highly rated. I have experience with their Board Certified Animal Surgery Team. I called them for Ms. Mo help but it required a capture of a wild squirrel and then bring to them for help. Since your squirrel is NR Home Pet, maybe you could get some relief.

Good luck,

Mr.SSG
