Hi-
We have a baby squirrel with presumed coccidiosis (yellow, slimy stool with a bad odor) but cannot find a mg/kg dose. Can someone please give me that info?

Thanks so much!

Hi Ratski53:
I apologize for you not yet having a response to your post and I apologize further when I say that I do NOT have a definitive dosing recommendation for you for Ponazuril. I have never used this medication. I subscribe to a number of Veterinary formularies and one of those that I use extensively is Carpenter's Exotic Animal Formulary 6th Edition from 2023 and they do have a dosing for Ponazuril for Rats and Prairie Dogs. If you want me to send this to you via a PM I will but I have no personal experience using this with any animals and cannot give any indication as it's likely safety profile or even efficacy with use in Squirrels although I would assume it can be efficacious but I cannot provide any reassurance regarding the dose. That being said, this Formular has been very helpful in the past but not for this particular medication.

I have used Toltrazuril (Baycox) a number of times and it is usually quite efficacious, relatively safe and I utilizing this medication as my preferred Coccidia Treatment. Others on TSB have also used Toltrazuril successfully!

Please let me know if you would like me to send the page from Carpenter's to you by PM. The Squirrel Board does not put any dosing or mixing instructions on the Open Board and this is done through Private Messaging only! If you have Toltrazuril available, dosing for this can be provided as well.

Regards,
SamtheSquirrel

Hello again Ratski53:
I want to mention that Wild Mammal Babies (WMB) 4th Edition does have a dosing for Ponazuril but while I have a general fondness for WMB's, this is a general Guide to Rehabbing and is definitely NOT Squirrel specific or Squirrel focused. If you possess this resource you can review there.

While I am "at it," another option is Albon (Sulfadimethoxine). This has been used in Squirrels but requires prolonged dosing as it does not kill Coccidia, it affects their growth and it is ultimately up to the organism's own immune system to do the actual killing. I just don't like this and I don't use it but it has been used very effectively and is an option for you if you have the availability and the inclination.
Regards,
