Hi,

Just wondered if anyone was able to determine the age of this squirrel was when he was brought to me from the photos?

Thanks :)

~6 weeks old. Could be week or so older than that...

Ah, thanks for that, slightly older than I thought then. I've had them 5 weeks today. Just moved them into a bigger space yesterday (house no. 3! - They grow so quickly!) so will have to start thinking about preparing for release in a few weeks. (I know there are plenty of helpful posts on here about that!)

Thanks again. 🙂

Your best age marker is the day their eyes open. It is usually within 24 hours either way of 5 weeks. They can curl their tail over their back like a squirrel at 6 weeks.

Ah, ok, that's interesting, thanks. The photos were taken the day I got him so his eyes were already open. The second arrived a day or two later (also eyes open... A female, looking similar, but a tiny bit smaller) This was following a couple of days of stormy weather and high winds.

They look exactly the same now (head on) and it's only their personalities that give them away! 😉

Thanks again! 🙂

Sometimes, a recently rescued squirrel will look younger than it actually is due to malnutrition, dehydration, trauma etc. Your little one is certainly over 5 weeks and may be ~6 weeks old. We typically raise indoors till 14-15 weeks old before moving to an outdoor cage for soft release.

Ah, maybe that's why the other one looked smaller. As I say, they look the same now.

That's what I plan to do with them... I'll be sorry to see them go, but they're certainly getting wilder and let off a lot of steam in their new bigger cage! 😂 - They very much belong outdoors! 😉

Thanks again! 🙂

The tail isn't pencil thin more puffy so I'm saying 6/7 weeks old 🤷

Yes, it was puffy, that's what confused me a bit!

Thanks for that, it's helpful to know! 🙂
