My apologies if this isn’t the correct place for this, my 1y/o eastern grey recently went through her first estrus and everything was fine until today it became very enflamed and irritated and I noticed white discharge, I was worried but she was still peeing fine. She came out from her nest a moment ago and her private was very swollen, and when I touched it alot of thick white puss came out. Any help is good help because where I am I cannot take her to a vet, I have baytril but I don’t have any other antibiotics.
Other than her privates being swollen and puss, there is a tiny scratch/scab on her part that I’m afraid may be the culprit. Beyond that her attitude is great and she’s been playing and eating/drinking just fine! If I hadn’t seen it I wouldn’t have known anything was wrong!

Hi Roodaddy,

Please give strength of Baytril; liquid or tablets ?? I assume you have a 1mL syringe for dosing if needed. Also, need weight of your squirrel.

More experience members will chime in soon with help.

Baytril 10mg liquid! I work nights and that’s where I am now, but I’ll be able to post her weight sometime around 2-4am.

It's normal for a female to have some discharge. No need to jump to ABX yet. Please just monitor for a few days.
If she's acting normal and eating normally just carry on as usual.

Thank y’all so much! This is my first squirrel and she means the world to me so I freak out at everything! I’ll keep a close eye on her and make sure nothing else comes up but yeah! That picture is almost identical to her discharge! Her private was a little more red but it’s also been her first estrus recently! Ill post back with an update as soon as I get home!

As the above photo shows, the discharge is white; yet as the heat progresses, the discharge will slow down, thickening as it begins to dry up, where it then becomes more of an ivory color.

To help loosen this sticky thicker discharge; take one of the softer sterile gauze pads to apply plain saline solution (no additives) to blot the area and very gently wipe up any discharge that your girl may leave behind after cleaning herself.

Should you then still see that the orifice contains some colored discharge; using your finger and thumb, ease out the discharge, pressing very gently a bit at a time from above her vulva down towards the opening, and wipe as needed.

This plain saline is also antibacterial. Keeping a bottle of it on hand in case of needing to clean the surface of the skin, skin wounds, or even treating a skin abscess for flushing out what remains of the contents after initially expelling most of it with your fingers. You can do this once or twice a day at most towards the end of the heat only as is needed.

"Arm and Hammer" plain saline solution is available at most markets.

ps. Using nitrile gloves and/or trimming back long fingernails, may help to prevent an unintentional injury to tender tissues.

Good afternoon all! Sorry for the lateness of the update, I got home last night and she was just sleeping and today she’s been just as active and sweet as always, eating and drinking normally so I believe it is just some normal discharge, her little private is still red and still excreting small amounts of the white gunk but that’s literally the only ailment. I am planning on continuing a close eye on her behavior/mood and monitoring her food and water intake to catch a change as soon as possible if one should arise, but with all of your kind help I do believe she is just fine! As I previously stated this is my first squirrel and I never imagined the world it would open to me, but with new ventures come unknowns such as this issue, I’m just grateful for a forum dedicated to the proper health and treatment of these amazing little babies! Thank you everybody who posted!
