My son is 20 months old. My squirrel is 5 weeks old. I keep them in opposite ends of the house and wash thoroughly between visits with each to prevent cross contamination. My question is this. I'd like very much for my son to be exposed to wildlife as early as possible so that he, like myself, develops a healthy respect and compassion for these animals. But I want to do so safely. Is it okay for me to take PeeWee into Christopher's room briefly for show and tell so long as show and tell doesn't become touchy feely? Or could I possibly put PeeWee in a fish tank so that Christopher will be able to see him? I don't want to endanger the health of my either of my "children" but I would very much like for them to know one another before PeeWee grows up and leaves us. Help..please, is that a crazy idea and just plain ridiculous?

The only thing that comes to mind is coccidia. But if you insist your human child practices hand washing just like a good jr rehabber should all should be fine. Note not all baby squirrels carry coccidia. GB makes some very good points. Keep the meeting quiet and gentle and all should be fine.:)

My two cents is, there are way more germs at the grocery store, the doctor's office, and the kindergarten than on a baby squirrel. A hand washing is always a good idea. I wouldn't hesitate to introduce my child to a baby squirrel, gently and quietly, since part of learning about wildlife IMO is learning to respect it. Good luck, you sound like a great mom to humans and squirrels alike.:Love_Icon
