View Full Version : Bloated, constipated baby
I have a female Grey that's about 6 weeks old. We've had her about 2 weeks, she was found in my yard so we took her in. 2 days ago she got bloated and constipated. We've been giving apple juice , pedealite, and formula mixed with double the water. Her little behind seems very sore and she's been lethargic. What else can we do for her?

Stop the juice, stop the pedialyte and stop the formula. Give small amounts of water only, but frequently. More to follow.. mostly questions.
She can also have a drop of Infant's Gas-X (simethicone) every 4 hours or so until the bloat resolves.

Some important questions:
What formula is she being fed?
For how long and how much has the Pedialyte been being given?
Are you familiar with Aspiration Pneumonia (AP)? Hold her to you ear like a phone and listen for a persistent "clicking" sound with each breath and for potentially a "raspy" or "rice crispy in milk" kinds of sounds in her lungs.
She's lethargic, but is she still taking the diluted formula well?
Can you post pictures of her bloated belly and also one of her from the back?
The bloat has gone down, her belly looks normal now. Her breathing seems fine, no noises other than a click from time to time (not every breth, maybe one click in 10 breths) . Currently, she's just very lethargic and has hard, large poops. Unfortunately I didn't take any pics of the poops this morning and she's currently asleep after her breakfast.
She is taking anything offered to her pretty well. She seemed less excited about taking it this morning but she was willing.
The formula is puppy formula. It was the only thing we could find other than kitten formula that has a lot of milk. The pedealyte was only give a couple of times and the amount was approximately 1cc . None today, just the watered down formula (2cc) and apple juice (1cc) this morning.

Hi Kurt... any more updates on your baby? Sounds like the bloat has passed and her appetite has returned. I would encourage switching to either Esbilac powdered puppy milk re placer (not the liquid and not the goat milk versions) or Fox Valley 20/50 (or a combination of half Esbilac and half Fox Valley 20/50... which happens to be my preference from 3.5weeks through wean).
The problems with bloat and poop are often caused by deficient / incorrect formula for a squirrel's needs... all puppy formula is not the same (not by a long shot!).
Here is a link to the healthy squirrel diet as well... her first and only solids should be a high quality rodent block!
