I have been able to capture a male gray squirrel who appears to be about 450g from my previous work with them. He is wobbly and falls over on his side. I have WYZE cams outside to watch the previously releases I have and other wildlife. I have 2 videos of this guy that are 12 seconds long each. I have this on one of my videos. He looks like he may have a wound on back right leg in one of the videos I have.
He is WILD. I have serious gloves if I need to try to hold him but this is what I can see just by watching him in my small cage 12"x18"x24". He has scratches [at least] looking into the cage.
When I was trying to catch him he had a difficult time getting up into a 15-20ft maple. He fell a couple times so these wound[s] could be from falls. He appears to be spending most of his time on the ground because of his balance. I noticed him yesterday on my camera but was only able to get him secured about 2 today. There are outdoor cats, so that's another potential issue from a possible cat bite.
I have experience with 2 separate litters. One beginning at 2 weeks and the other at 5 weeks of age. The first little was at the beginning of COVID and I had to do it. Y'all helped be then. My boy ended up with aspiration pneumonia. With your help I treated him and he is coming daily for his nuts to my back door. I appreciate your help greatly.
I am a Registered Nurse so do have experience with drugs. I have on hand gabapentin 300mg capsules, which is my guess for his wobbly/balance issue. I also have these antibiotics. Amoxicillin 500mg capsules, Doxycycline 100mg capsules, Bactrim DS 800/169 tablets, Ceftin 500mg tablets, Cipro 500mg tablets. Yes. I save everything. Some are expired but I know that doesn't matter. Again I'm guessing he is 450g. I can't weigh the boy unless you give me an idea. I have the scales but have not been able to figure out how to do past the point they are wild. Since my goal is to release, I let them be wild.
I am in Tennessee and reached out to a Rochester, NY rehabber I've been following for over a year. Her day has turned into a train wreck so she asked me to go ahead and reach out to y'all as I told her I could. I knew she had her hands full today. She did tell me once I have the necessary dosage that she puts the medication in a spoon and mixes it into almond or peanut butter until blended, then smears it on a walnut into the crevices. I had never had to medicate a wild squirrel so didn't know how I was going to do that.
I have reached out to a local rehabber a couple hours ago but so far not response.
Could you guys please help me dose this guy with whatever you think. I don't know If i can send videos on here or not, but I have followed Facebook Squirrel Rehab and Advice, as well as Squirrel Rehab and Release Network so feel confident about my head injury from a fall thoughts. I will not be upset in the least if you have other thoughts. I just know I've seen gabapentin given many times for what I'm seeing. Then I think antibiotics won't hurt just in case a cat got him. I need dosage and length of time. Whatever you will provide me.
Thanks a million times over!
