Big Mamma is a beloved wild squirrel who has been coming to my back patio for water and snacks (Walnuts, almonds--raw unsalted of course). She would come by just about every day for the last year or so.

In the beginning of June, she showed up with balance problems. She was listing to her right side. I thought she had gotten injured in a scrap (she's tough and gives as good as she gets) but when I've examined her via binoculars, there is no evidence of injury from a fight or fall.

Each week, I see the leaning get a little worse. She's now crab walking/running. But she does in fact run. She may stumble a bit, but she makes it. When she eats, she has gone from eating sitting up steadily, to wobbly-constantly adjusting to regain balance. And now she eats while laying on her side in the grass.

Initially, I was thinking maybe MBD, until my camera picked up a raccoon traversing my patio late one night this past week. So I was thinking raccoon roundworm . But here we are at the end of July and she's still moving strong, although awkwardly. I thought roundworm takes squirrels relatively quickly, but she's still here close to 2 months after I observed her motor problems.

There are days when she seems a little worse than others, but she still thrives. The only problem I'm seeing right now (besides the motor/balance problems) is that she's itching quite a bit. And she can't twist her body to get to what's itching her. Sometimes she'll lay on her side writhing as a way to scratch the itchy area (I guess)

I'm not sure what to do. Do I capture and see if maybe a wildlife refuge will take her and possibly rehab her with medicines? Is there something I can give her that will help her. I was thinking Ivermectin?--I'm familiar with the rice grain technique and have used it successfully. But I'm worried since something seems to be impacting her motor skills and maybe Ivermectin worsens it(?).

Do I leave her be? She still has spirit. But she's not the same squirrel who visited me prior to that fateful June morning. She'll chase other squirrels even while running awkwardly.

What can/should I do...it breaks my heart to see her this way. Suggestions?

Aw. I would give her the ivermectin. The dose is small and the torment of thousands of mange mites boring around the skin must be horrible.

Other than trapping her and keeping her from living her wild life, the best thing is to stuff them with as much food as you can every time they show up. She knows full well that she is messed up and wouldn't be out and about if she didn't have to eat, so if you can satisfy that need, she is more likely to go home to her nest where she will be safe from predators.

I am sorry...falling in love with your wilds is inevitable and always fraught with tragedy. Of course, you can't help it.

Thanks CritterMom...I'm going to give IVM a try. Hopefully it'll make a difference for her.

Update:

Today, as I'm entering my living room which overlooks the patio, I see a squirrel sipping water out of the water dish I put out for them and birds, whomever needs it. Its a little strange because its 8:20 pm and darkness is approaching. Squirrels are usually nowhere to be found. But this one is taking a long sip.

After waiting for the squirrel to finish, I open the patio door and the squirrel starts to run away. Then it stops. I toss an almond and it retrieves it, then another and it retrieves that one too. I noticed that the squirrel was running a little strangely...its crab-running.

Its Big Mamma. And she's looking more like Svelte Mamma since she's not as big. I can assure you tears started running down my face....I hadn't seen her since Sunday

She remembered where to get food and water-right here!

And she wasn't laboring in movement as she was when I last saw her...her movement was smoother and healthier.

Then it hit me--maybe she was pregnant. There are several female squirrels that I've observed who come to my bird feeder for feeding at days end. Sometimes, they stop by late.

Just last week I had one stop by at 8:10. She was a female. I know this because she (Oprah) knows me and always stops by for a few almonds--which she did. Oprah disappeared for awhile then she showed up again last week. She looked noticeably slimmer.

I'm thinking Oprah wanted to make sure there was no competition for food. Most squirrels are gone at that hour. Big mamma probably did the same thing today...

The news for me is that she's alive and seemingly healthier. And I'll hang my hat on that...
