Rama Rota, 13 plus yrs. No top teeth, bottom teeth seen here.... teeth have not grown for yrs, are short and stumpy. Can see tongue resting at top of teeth. Gums have grown up between and over front and back of teeth. Looking for help in what to do to get the gums to recede back. He has stopped eating; I think due to the pain of having to "scrape" his food rather than bite. I have an infant toothbrush I can do some gentle brushing upward using coconut oil, and I have a healing gel I have been using for a few days.... got that from Dentist. It is okay for squirrels.
He has been on Clindamycin for almost a week, in case of infection.

Aw. Poor Rama. Rosie, while they do look puffy, are you sure the gums are growing, and it isn't just that the teeth have receded so far?

Is he eating blocks? If you grind the blocks up and then mix them with all sorts of things - a bit of nut butter for sure, babyfood he may like, yogurt if he likes that - and mix it together until you have something the same texture as stiff cookie dough. You can roll them into balls and he can hold them and eat them like he would normally, but they fall apart and are nice and soft. It gives the feel of normal eating while not abrading his mouth. Plus you can adjust the flavors with foods he likes constantly. You do need the nut butter - it is the glue of the whole thing!

Hi CritterMom,

I could not find my original post but it was copied for me and pasted to Rama's old thread so here I am, FINALLY reading
your reply.

He refuses baby food, even mixed with FV and coconut oil, loved yogurt, but now won't touch it. etc.

I used to make Boo Balls for him, he stopped eating them but I can try again...... see if it will tempt him.

I can try to get some almond butter, that would probably be the only type of nut better I could get here, other than peanut butter.
Never gave him that, I think it is a no no, if I recall correctly. Or it used to be.

He is in bed now, but will try giving him another mix with baby food etc. Various combinations.
He just really acts BLAH.

Thanks and will be back to update, etc.

Go ahead and try the peanut butter. It is new to him so it might perk up his interest. Nothing with nuts is a healthy diet, but Rama needs some chow he can eat, and if peanut butter helps, use it. You can always add some additional calcium if you want.

Tried the PeanutButter. He took 3 or 4 licks and then walked away. Will keep trying with various items.
Thanks CritterMom.

Do you have access to infant ibuprophen - or childrens for that matter, we can dose either. If his gums hurt, that will help.

I have infant ibuprofen and have the dosing..... I can start giving him that.

Just wondering.......... I don't think so, but do you think this is an abscess? The gum/flesh has been growing or moving upwards for a long time......... this is not
sudden or over the course of a couple of weeks.

Thanks

Thanks for letting me know about Conker...... I did not think it was an abscess but had not heard of other squirrels having the same issue.

It is possible that Rama's kidneys are not functioning properly, that could be making him feel like crap I guess.
I just wish he would start eating again.

Don't know anything about kidney function? Never thought of that.

Just a little update.

On the side where he has the most sinus issues, sure he has had an odontoma for years, his eye has
been sealed shut off and on after he sleeps for a while, so I decided to give Rama Rota the Amikacin drops in his sinus. .
Being snorty and eye closing is usually a sign that the infection is back / or worse.

The drops have helped in the past when he would stop eating and his sinus was bad...... he would start eating again after
using the drops.
Hope that is the problem this time, but just didn't want to use the Amikacin so soon after the last time. But, if I must then
I must.
Not going to let him starve even if the help may only be temporary. Will see what comes.

Will update once I see / or not / any changes.
