I posted this on an old thread. I start reading because I'm trying to learn all I can then reply, or post, no noticing the age of the thread. Sorry. Anyway, besides my little Peanut, we also have 7 dogs, mainly ankle biters, but I use a holistic flea and tick repellant on them and it works pretty well. I was wondering if I should use it on Peanut too. He is not running around outside, but my husband has built him a window box to sit in of a morning before the heat and humidity gets to bad. If I should use it on him, how often?

Natural Flea and Tick Repellant.

Recipe:
1/2 Cup (120ml) Non-alcoholic Witch Hazel Extract
1/4 Cup (60ml) Liquid Coconut Oil
(3ml) Neem Oil 10 drops
(.5ml) Cedarwood Essential Oil 10 drops
(.5ml) Lavender Essential Oil

Dogs = 3xp/week
Cats =1 x p/week

You are not the only person who has posted on an old thread. :grin2

I’m not sure anyone on here has used a homemade product on a squirrel containing the ingredients you have posted. I would be very concerned about the toxicity of something like this on a small 1-2 pound animal. It’s for this reason that we recommend the use of the kitten/puppy version of Revolution (Selamectin). This product is known to be safe and can be administered topically or orally with the same level of safety. Only one drop is necessary from a kitten/puppy vial of Selamectin every 30 days and the remainder can be capped and stored in the refrigerator for later use.

Unless someone posts otherwise, I’m afraid you’ll have to do your own research to determine whether any of these ingredients are toxic to squirrels. Case in point…..tea tree oil is used in many holistic approaches but is quite toxic to squirrels. Unfortunately that lesson was learned the hard way. :sniff

We had a quadriplegic NR named Ziggy for 2.5 years. While he was mainly an indoor squirrel, Ziggy insisted on peeing and pooping outside on the ground (even in winter). So, he would get mites, fleas, etc., as there are lots of squirrels in our yard.

We would add a few drops of neem oil and lavender oil to coconut oil (which is more or less solid), then rub it all over Ziggy, avoiding right around the eyes and mouth. This helped quite a bit with the mites, fleas, itching, etc. Ziggy LOVED his coconut/neem/lavender massages! We did this many, many times (weekly) and never observed any ill effects.

With new baby squirrels with fleas, I have taken warm water with drops of lemon essential oil and rubbed this on their fur. I then take them to the covered porch and leave them well swaddled for maybe 15-20 minutes, with a heating pad so they stay snug and warm. The fleas leave them and end up in the bedding. Baby squirrel comes back inside to fresh bedding, old bedding with fleas get tossed outside before eventually getting laundered.
