Hello good evening.
Tonight, about 4.5 hours before posting this thread I caught my cat in the yard playing with something.
So I went over to find a squirrel looked dead already, picked him up by the tail and he barely moved, brought him inside and soon he was full of energy running around the dog carrier he was placed in for shelter..
About two hours after the bite I sprayed him with Vetericyn for poultry. that is all I have for now. Reached out to a local wildlife refuge but it is late and they did not answer.
My squirrel is dying.
I picked him up and moved back his skin to expose as much of him as I could and used a cotton swap with more Vetericyn to explore and clean.
He does not have deep punctures but his skin was ripped back in two areas pretty far. He is now resting with a warm water pack and a towel and breathing steady. He has balled up his face into himself and he seems to have the will to survive. I understand if i dont get an answer as it is passed midnight where I am at but I would appreciate any advice to save this injured North American Flying Squirrel. Please and thank you.

There is a vet in your area that treats wildlife. Her name is Dr. Molly Pearson at Micanopy Animal Hospital 352-466-0067. Please reach out to them if the squirrel survived the night.

She will need antibiotics to treat against the bacteria carried in cats' saliva that is extremely deadly to squirrels. Human antibiotics can be used, only 1 pill is needed to treat a small flyer (it is mixed into a suspension and dosed). The Vetricyn will not treat the internal infection developing. Check you medicine cabinet for leftover antibiotics, ask family, friends and neighbors. Some that are effective include Augmentin, Cipro and doxycycline. If you find anything, post the name of the antibiotic(s) and someone will advise if it will treat a cat bite effectively. We will need to know how much the squirrel weighs to help provide correct dosing instructions for you.
