Hey guys, last time I gave her Cephalexin, she weighed 771grams. Now she weighs close to 579g's (1 lb and 4 oz). I have Amoxacillian and Cephalexin tabs. How mich should I give my private inflamed ground squirrel? Thank you guys :grin2

Hi Beecheykeen:
I'm sorry that Icarus is having a health issue and I'm sorry you have not yet had a response to your new posts! I just returned from work and noticed your thread. I have a couple of questions. You mentioned "private inflamed." Does this mean that there is skin swelling of the genital region? This is different from a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) which is an infection involving one or more of the components of the urinary tract although most commonly, it involves the bladder. Signs of a UTI often include one or more of the following: obvious discomfort while Icarus is urinating, cloudy urine and/or unusual or foul smell of the urine. If the problem is actually swelling of the genitals, this suggests infection of the skin itself (cellulitis) and not a UTI (although both can be present). Please clarify what seems to be going on. If swelling of the skin, please post photos.
Do you have access to any other antibiotics either directly from your own "stash" or from friends or relatives? Of the two antibiotics you do have, I would suggest the Cephalexin as opposed to the Amoxicillin for either possibility. By the way, is this plain, amoxicillin or does it contain Clavulanate as well? If so, this is quite different from plain amoxicillin and may very well, be preferred.
Once the issue with Icarus is better understood, I would be glad to make a recommendation and my post will "bump" your thread back into view for others to see. One of the Admins or others who make medication mixing and dosing instructions will need to contact you via a Private Message with this information.

What is the size in milligrams of the meds you have? Is there ANY chance that you have Amoxicillin clavulanate, not just plain Amoxicillin?

Hey thanks for getting back to me. When I get home from work I'll take some pictures of her region. It's definitely red, and I think she went into heat recently as this has happened before. She's a California ground squirrel and they go into heat a couple times a year. She does urinate frequently. Often while just walking or if she just stops for a minute. Its small amounts here and there. She doesn't show any signs of pains that I am able to read.

Oh and about the amox, I'll have to look at that when I get home as well. It's capsules and I don't remember it saying anything else, so I'll double when I get back home tonight.

Thanks Beecheykeen:
I am assuming then, that Icarus's skin must be unusually red red (any swelling?) as you have apparently noticed differences from her usual cyclic changes. As I mentioned, IF the "Amoxicillin" is actually Amoxicillin plus Clavulanate, it is essentially a different antibiotic from plain amoxicillin and would offer some significant potential advantages over plain amoxicillin for treatment of a skin infection and a UTI as well! As CM pointed out, before antibiotic mixing and dosing instructions can be formulated and sent to you, the strength of the antibiotics must be known with certainty (the amount of the antibiotic contained in each capsule or tablet that should be stated in milligrams [mg]). Also, when you state that Icarus "weighs close to 579g's;" is this a recent accurate weight or just an approximation? If an approximation, I would suggest obtaining an accurate weight now so that the dosing instructions can also be as accurate as possible.

I would not be at all surprised to see that swelling of the genitalia being related to the heat cycle. Certainly frequent urination can be, too - that is how the girls advertise where they are, and a dribble here and a dribble there is a way to conserve it so they can advertise to a larger area.

Thanks for that tid bit, I wasn't sure what the correlation to dripping and being in heat had.

Before I had gotten a message yesterday, I did give her a little cephelexin in apple sauce based on the dose from last time making the dose a rab smaller as she weighed a tad more then. ALSO, she been more sleepy then usual. Is that a side effect of Cephalexin? Amd here's how she looked this morning. I feel like it's a little less swollen then it was a couple days ago, and she didn't quite as much or randomly on me when I brought her out yesterday. But what do you all think?

I don't recall her being sleepy from her meds before so I'm hoping it's coincidence. She also ran I to the closet and immediately started taking bites out of the soft coating on my boyfriends weights :tap. While she's done that before to my worry it seems to mess with her in anyway luckily so I'm hoping I pulled her out before she could do any damage to herself ><.

If it is a rubbery or plastic type coating, they usually LOVE to chew through it, and take bites out, but they typically don’t swallow or eat it, but spit it out. 😵😵*💫😝

She LOVES it. We can't let her out while he has the exercise mat out. She Boba in out if nowhere and rips off a chunk and ducks away before he can even scowl at her lol. And this repeats. It looks like a Tom and Jerry cartoon. I didn find blue mat pieces in her poops so I am trying to be very cautious of what she eats.

Hi Beechykeen:
Sedation (sleepiness being caused by the medication) is not usually associated with use of Cephalexin. Also, it appears that the Amoxicillin prescription is truly plain Amoxicillin and NOT Amoxicillin plus Clavulanate. IF Icarus needs antibiotics for a skin or UTI, the Cephalexin would be, IMHO, a much more preferable antibiotic compared with plain amoxicillin.
The photos will be best evaluated by others who are familiar with the cyclical changes in Ground Squirrels. CritterMom may very well be correct now that we have the photos to study!
