hey everyone!!

oooooof summer is hitting hard! pests insects and bugs — oh my!

muchi (wild) is either pregnant or nursing (i can’t tell) and i noticed she was REALLY itchy and had two or three fleas on her a couple weeks ago.

i dosed her with revolution on a pecan on april 21. it didn’t seem to help at all, and today she has over double the amount of fleas?! here’s a video —

https://youtu.be/kA69JRicIps

can i redose her with revolution? i was going to wait 30 days, but the increase in bugs is insane. i also have ivermectin but she’s nursing so that’s probably out.

i’m making sure she gets coconut oil but feel stuck on how to help. should i trap her and put the cage with her in a tub with dawn soap? i feel like she’s gonna hate me if i do that lol

i’m really worried for her and for her babies!

I have NO first hand information on actually doing this, but I did determine that these can be used together.

Capstar (nytenpyram) is an excellent flea killer and begins working really fast. It is safe for squirrels and is what we give to babies when they come in with maggots. It is also safe for pregnant/lactating animals. But Capstar kills adult fleas only, so if the animal has an infested nest, it will get new fleas on it constantly. It can be used frequently though.

I am thinking that it may be beneficial to continue with the Revolution which kills all stages of fleas and use the Capstar when you see the fleas getting bad.

How much Revolution are you using? If you are using one drop, use more. 2 or 3. I doubt you guys have the tiny squirrels they have in FL. We had long time members here who had a female gray in Texas that had been released but spent as much time inside as out. They used a FULL vial of the puppy/kitten on her topically every 30 days for the 7 or 8 years she was with them! I think the safety profile must be pretty tolerant.

Do some reading on the two meds. The drug name for Revolution is selamectin, Capstar is nytenpyram. Capstar is available at most of our chain pet stores and online; Revolution we mostly get from you guys!

Hopefully some others who have dealt with this will chime in here.

Wow! She’s definitely not small but I can weigh her if that would help. I used one drop on a pecan. Should I wait until it’s been thirty days still or go ahead and redose her with a second pecan?

Ohhh I’ve read about Capstar! I don’t know how I’d give it to her though. She’s comfy with me and will let me touch her, but I don’t think she’d sit still long enough to get a syringe in her mouth Do you know any other way to dose wilds?

And while I was reading, I got a little confused and want to make extra super sure — if she’s been dosed with revolution, can I dose capstar? Or should I wait until the revolution is out of her?

She’s here right now licking coconut oil off an almond <3

Ok I’m going to weigh her today to confirm if I can give her another drop of Revolution after only 13 days!

Yes. Then when 30 days from the initial dose rolls around, redose with the larger total dose.

Capstar is really safe stuff. Google "giving nytenpyram and selamectin together" and you will find a few articles about giving it together to dogs. As I said, I have no experience with squirrels.

She weighs 803 grams! Does that make her a small or large squirrel?

She is a really large girl! I think Ivermectin can be a bit more effective than Revolution but it is not safe for babies and it looks like she is nursing so stick with Revolution.

Thanks for replying! Do you think her weight means she’s overweight or pregnant again? Or is this normal for a nursing squirrel?

While I wait for the Revolution day (May 22), is there anything I can do in the meantime to get rid of the existing fleas? Even if it’s just temporary relief.

Would flea spray on her nipples harm her kids? I have food grade pet safe diatomaceous earth as well — should I put out a bowl and have her roll around in it?

She’s itching her skin raw around her nipples and it looks so uncomfortable :(

Today is the day! Today she weighs 736g — she weighed 803g a couple weeks ago. I’m going to dose her with two drops this time. Or should I do three?

Thanks again!

I would do three.

I believe the safety profile of Revolution is pretty broad. We had a married couple, The Skuls, who posted here for years who had a release named Rocky who was an indoor/outdoor squirrel her whole life. She used to bring her pinkies home and expected "Grandma and Grandpa" to help her raise them! Rocky got dosed with an ENTIRE vial of the puppy/kitten Revolution once a month for the whole 7 or 8 years she shared her life with them. We were all a little horrified, and I wouldn't do it myself, but it says a lot for how well it is tolerated.

And I am sure we are growing super fleas and ticks nowadays...

Thanks!!! I’ll definitely do that. I’m still waiting for her to come get it but it’s raining so she might not have it today. Fingers crossed!

i’m happy to report that all the fleas have been killed and haven’t returned!

the effect was almost immediate, so it was definitely because i under-dosed the revolution the first time. i swear, one day she seemed miserable and the next day she was so happy and energetic!

so far it’s been three weeks since the dose and her fur is almost filled in — she had been scratching her whole body raw.

her three babies have been coming by and i’ve never seen fleas or any other bugs on them. thankfully she hasn’t passed them on to her kiddos!

thanks so much for your help everyone :grouphug :Love_Icon

Aw, all nice and fuzzy! If you see issues with the babies, go ahead and dose them. It is made for puppies and KITTENS and kittens are notoriously frail, so a squirrel that is leaving the nest is plenty old enough if needed.

You may want to put her on a schedule for the summer so she doesn't get re-infested. Once every 30 days.

thank you! the babies have gotten big so fast! i think i’ll start dosing them next month. i’m saving the revolution i have left for some squirrels who need the extra help.

i ordered more revolution but it’s taking AGES to come! it’s too bad you can’t buy that in bulk like with ivermectin :shakehead

omg when we were trying to give muchi her second dose she was like “nooooo i don’t want an unshelled nut!” definitely had to coax/lecture her :rotfl

I am more of a holistic kind of gal and found this on YouTube. It works pretty good on my puppies and am concidering using it on Peanut. Any opinions before I do so? As I said earlier, I am still learning.
