View Full Version : Hypoglycemia (?) new baby, crashing

Got a call from a worker who found a baby from the storms. Mama and nest gone. He said he had only had it two days, but this baby is completely emaciated. So I’m not really sure how many days it’s been without Mama. Said they have been trying to feed nuts and fruit, and kitten milk (wouldn’t take he said).
When I got it in the house to asses it , the baby was splayed out and paddling, and arching his head back. Acting neuro/possible seizure? He was cold. Immediately started warming him up and rubbed molasses on gums. Gave him 3 cc of warmer lactated ringers sub q (under skin). Within an hour or less he was alert and wobbling around. I attempted a tiny bit of warm water with molasses and he clumsily swallowed a couple mls. Put him back in bin.
Tuff’s Mom is on vacation so she volunteered to take over for ICU a day or two ; she got here about an hour after the oral water /molasses and he was up wobbly walking. She gave him a Henry’s block and he detonated it! Even grrr grrrd while trying to hold it! This baby is absolutely starved (btw about 83g).
Waited a bit and then she offered diluted (2 p FV/ 1p water) formula and he took about 3 ml.
Put him back to bin to soak up the calories and warmth and let Tuff’s Mom take him .
They had a rough night. He took a couple more feedings but not entire volumes (if I understood). And by third check, was completely limp and seizing. She rubbed molasses on his gums and he revived; seizures stopped. And now as I’m typing this for her , he’s attempting to swallow full strength formula. He will only swallow a few drops at a time, but he’s trying… He’s trying to live!
So what do we do with sinking babies? If this was a parvo puppy he would be on a continuous drip of IV fluids with dextrose added.
With tiny /emaciated babies what is the best way to attempt to keep their blood sugar stable (assuming this is even blood sugar, sure acting like a hypoglycemia issue) ??
Do we add dextrose to LRS and give sub q (since he’s not swallowing enough to get full %)? That’s what I was thinking of trying but wanted to check here first,
Do we run molasses every hour/ every (? hours) ?
Do we try another oral electrolyte solution every (?) hours?
Tuff’s Mom will gladly take calls from trusted members ;
Please PM me if can give her a call, or post suggestions and she will be checking. But she does better in a crisis, if she can talk to a person,
So as of right now he is back on his feet. I am diluting pedialyte and water and he is taking that well. It was a complete turn around. He doesn’t and will not take any formula as of right now. Eyes are brighter and he is warming up.

Any formula….like goats milk, FV or Esbilac? With his emancipation I think I’d try the goats milk, with fresh goats milk and full fat vanilla yogurt. You might hold off on the heavy cream and work it in gradually. He needs some calories, but it must be done slowly so he doesn’t crash from reseeding syndrome.

Emaciated not emancipation…I hate spell check!
Emaciated not emancipation…I hate spell check!
I have him back now meaning back to the land of the living. He is slow sluggish but taking hydration I finally got him to take formula after he peed clear. Eyes are brighter. Offering hydration every hour right now. Anything else?

Wow. He must have just been so starved that he needs constant small sugar doses - the poor little guy. How old?
Just keep him nice and warm and watch him and listen to him closely. A lot of times these babies get pneumonia - I don't think it is even from your feeding technique - my guess is that some of them end up either self suckling or hitting their brothers and I can't see any reason why a baby couldn't aspirate that way...
Oh, I hope he rallies! :Love_Icon

So we are not out of the weeds but we are coming out. He is still really weak but doing better. I am offering formula first then hydration around 1-1 1/2 hours. Small doses of both at the moment. He’s on his feet he’s just super shaky. He’s still not self regulating his temp, but we will get there. I am using Mel1959 suggestion for formula.

Don't give him the option to get off the heat right now. Put the whole container on the heating pad and put a nice pile of fleece in it so he can climb up onto it and get away from the bottom if he really gets warm, but can't stumble into a cool area and get "stuck" there because he isn't strong enough to.
Another quick update…took hydration and formula. We are doing both small amounts so he can get some sort of life back. Last feeding the light came on and he is so hungry. Took 1 cc of formula and hydration. He is starving to death. He didn’t lose his warmth this time out to feed. So can we say he is doing better with self regulating of body temp? I went back to look for the sibling where this one was found. Any ideas on how to find this other baby. Anyways Archie is coming along nicely and is grhhh grhhhing. Say a prayer for him.

🙏🏻💕🙏🏻
So just to update. Archie is doing great. Still bumbling but much stronger and brighter eyed than yesterday. He is going to grow up and be king one day. We fed ever 1 1/2 hours yesterday. Small amounts like 1-1 1/2 cc, I offered hydration only after feeding was complete. He gradually took less and less hydration and more formula. At 1 am this morning we were at 3cc of formula and he licked hydration. Then at god knows what time this morning he took 4cc and no hydration. He is up and playing at the moment. Such a sweet baby. I’m gonna add photos of how content he really is once his belly is full. I’m amazed at his resilience. He went from a completely limp seizing baby to this in 24 hours. As long as he has fight in him I have fight for him.
Signing off,

I have been hoping for this update!!!:w00t
Know this: That baby was done. Especially when they become emaciated like that, when they are doing everything they can to just make it stop (crawling off the heat) it is all but impossible to bring them back and bring him back you did. It is just pure hard work - I have had the "opportunity" to nurse not one but two mouse babies, and feeding and checking and stressing every 1.5 hours is not easy. You willed that baby back. Congratulations!
I can't wait to see more pics!

I spoke to Tuff a little earlier. I had asked her to watch like a hawk for any symptoms of pneumonia - these babies that come in super emaciated, dehydrated and basically on death's door always seem to develop pneumonia and when this little one started breathing hard and not particularly wanting to eat, stopping playing, the trigger was pulled and he was given Baytril and sub-q hydration again. I hope the super fast Baytril is super fast enough...

Thank you for updating Crittermom. Now it’s a waiting game. He’s fought so hard to stay on this side of the dirt. Any suggestions are appreciated on keeping him here with me. He’s been through so much already.

Just warm and keep up with hydration with a little sugar and continue giving him formula. What formula is he taking now?

I spoke to Tuff and suggested that she switch him to fresh goats milk formula. He was resisting the formula she was using which was 50/50 Esbilac/Fox Valley. I’m not sure if it was old or new Esbilac. I remember having a discussion with Patti (HRT4SQRLS) about feeding goats milk formula to seriously compromised babies because of its pureness and lack of fillers that had to be broken down and processed by the liver and kidneys. This is why I suggested the switch. If others think I’m wrong, please speak up.
Now that I am a little settled. I mixed up goats milk formula to see if he will take it. I have pedialyte on hand. I also have subq on hand. I need to know how much subq is required and how often. Baytril given, clavamox was suggested. So all of y’all are the experts please discuss. I also have benebac, steroids, anything you can think of on hand almost. Lol

Stay the course with Baytril as it works fast.
Ya know I don’t mind if he walks up to the light, I just don’t need him stepping in the light yet. Like maybe 10 years from now.

I hope the GMF does the trick. I agree, the lack of fillers and such, may certainly help.
In my (limited with squirrels. But UNLIMITED with other animals) experience, it’s pretty hard to “overdo” sub Q. The body accepts/absorbs what it needs, and filters out the rest. To a reasonable extent. However tooooo much obviously will throw off electrolytes in the wrong direction.
cORRECT anything I said, if I’m wrong! Please!
I hope he comes back around!!
Enjoy the SUNLIGHT! STAY AWAY FROM “THE LIGHT!”

First I want to thank everyone that had a hand in yesterday. Archie starting clicking about 30 min after we gave him the 1st Baytril dose. His respitory rate was 120 when he was sleeping. Snickerbar was unsure, I was unsure, but everything seemed to point straight at AP. My first question was why and how? Who knows? He is still so so emaciated weighing it at a whooping 82g yesterday morning. After we subqued, fed about 3ml’s, gave Baytril and watched for seizures we finally went home. I kept checking on him just to make sure he stayed out of the light lol…with Mel1959 suggestion I had mixed up formula and waited. It’s kinda hard to wake him up but when he does he his fully ready to eat. He has had 4ml every 4 hours since we came home. Just topped him off with 4 more. I dosed him at 9 with his second dose of Baytril, didn’t hear clicking but this time feeding could have sworn I heard clicking again. I dunno. They make a lot of noises when they sleep and after they eat. I will offer fluids shortly. I haven’t personally seen him pee, tried stimulating but got nothing. He has pooped three baby poops but they continue to come out black. Hopefully that will change as well. As far as it goes right now he is ok and staying on this side of the dirt. Momma needs a nap. Continue to pray for my baby. Signing off for now.
I always get the hard one,

Great job! :great Hopefully today you’ll see the poop change to yellow and he’ll start urinating. Keep giving the hydration in between his feedings. I’d keep him at the 5% amount for feeding until he gets more stable. No sense overloading his system.

So this morning to my amazement, Archie was on his feet and met me at the side of the cage. He was awake on his feet and hungry!!!! What a great open your eyes present. He is at 87g this morning and knocked out 4.5ml of formula. So the Baytril works really really quickly. How long do I give the Baytril? 5 days? He has a water bottle, he is refusing any hydration other than if I sub q. He is doing great this morning. So let’s talk formula in the up coming days. Poops are still black in color?? That is my concern. Is there a reason for that. His poops have been really stinky up until late last night. No more stinky but still black. He was found in a pile of rubble with is deceased mother. Could that have been why? I mean did he suckle his dead mother? Anyways that’s the update. So grateful for all of y’all!!!!

OH THANK GOODNESS!!!
The other night when you asked me if he should be taking any meds, when he was improving and eating well, I still had that thought poking me in the head about him - my subconscious had been beating me over the head that he was guaranteed to get pneumonia, but he was getting better... I overrode my own thoughts and advised you to wait until you saw something like lethargy and not eating and when you told me that he was doing just that yesterday I nearly puked. I have been driving myself nuts since then. Every time I override my "little voice" it is the wrong decision. I decided to stop doing that yesterday...
Do you have any nice, fresh (or kept in the freezer) Fox Valley 20/50? If I were you, I would start very, very slowly transitioning him to the FV. Take your time - a couple days to get all the way - or to the spot he seems to be happiest is fine. The goats milk formula is not a terribly substantial formula. It doesn't have a lot in the way of "solids" and I suspect that his body is sucking everything out of what he is consuming now and that is why you aren't seeing poops. The FV is much more substantial. You will find that once he is completely or a least mostly transitioned that there are more poops, and that he will want to go longer between feedings. They will be very easy to spot - bright orange!

I kept saying that I thought he had pneumonia the other day. I am pretty in tuned to change. His breathing had changed but to be honest couldn’t remember what normal breathing looks like. I googled respiratory rate in squirrels. That was no help, one said 120 the other said 40-50. I know you do respiratory rates at complete rest. His was at 120 sound asleep. My guts said this wasn’t right. Snickerbar didn’t know either but we both said no that’s not right. His skin color had changed. It didn’t look right. So we went with Baytril even at the risk of seizures. We both believed his seizures were due to hypoglycemia not head injury. I was up with him until 3 this morning to make sure he was ok. I’m so obsessive with that. The hell this baby went through I’m shocked that he survived at all. He looks so much like Ringer and has the personality of Tuff. I can not wait to see this journey end with him in the trees. Thank you for your help!!!!

I think CM was spot on with adding the Fox Valley. Mix up your goats milk formula and the FV formula SEPARATELY. To transition fill the syringe with 75% GM and 25% FV. Feed that for several feedings, then move to a 50/50% mix and then to 25% GM and 75% FV. Finally you’ll be at 100% FV. Several feedings at each level so his tummy has a chance to adapt slowly to the richness of the FV.
I’m glad to hear he’s stabilizing. :Love_Icon
Like can I catch a break with this guy. Who would have ever thought I could just feed him, play with him and put him away after he had been swept out of a tree at 155mph. Then was put in the elements for over a week after the tornado. But here we are and I’m going to for the love of god save this boy. This is his poops, developed some time through the night. 324659
For once I have changed nothing and stayed the course. Baytril .03 twice a day 12 hours apart. Feedings 4 hours apart 4.5ml. Stopped feeding at midnight. He is at 92g this morning woo hoo weight gain. But now the what ever is going on. Poops is all down his legs. So now I have to give a baby a bath that is recovering from pneumonia. Formula is the goats milk formula recipe. I used only half the amount of whipping cream though as suggested. It doesn’t smell finally, color went from black to a dark brown now to a reddish brown runny mess. Help again.

Oh, Archie...
Well, the color is looking better, anyway.
I have questions for you. How old is the goats milk? Are you using fresh or the powdered? If it is fresh, know that fresh goats milk goes bad much faster than cow's milk does. Since I, personally, don't drink goats milk, and it naturally has a sort of sour smell much different that cows, I would be hard pressed to determine by the sniff test if it is on it's way out. For that reason, when I have used it, as soon as I open the container I pour a bunch out into teeny little freezer containers I have and store it in the freezer so I have fresh each time I need it. If it has been in the fridge for a few days, I would replace it and the yogurt, too. Cream lasts a really long time and the smell of it when it turns will advertise it clearly.
This could also be from the baytril. It doesn't usually cause diarrhea but all antibiotics can - they kill the good gut bacteria while they are killing the bad pneumonia bacteria. I know that yogurt has probiotics but it is normally killed by heating the formula. You may want to boost his gut bacteria by using some of the human probiotic capsules. They contain a powder that is slightly sweet and not at all highly flavored so it hides well. Don't give it within 2-3 hours of the meds to keep it from being killed immediately.
This could just be his body ridding itself of all the poop he hasn't been pooping out for the past few days. If it continues, give him a little pepto bismol - basically a drop (about .07ml). It will turn that poop black again, BTW. Obviously continue hydration while the diarrhea continues.
How is he acting besides the poops? It sounds like he is still eating - is he still peppy?

Let’s see if I can answer all the questions without having to edit..lol
Liquid bought it from Walmart Meyersburg just opened day before yesterday. Still fresh. Yogurt just opened, full fat Greek honey/vanilla always have it on hand, still fresh. Whipping cream is fresh just purchased and opened 2 days ago. I am with you that this could be the Baytril considering his tummy has been empty for so long. He is still peppy and very lively lol. Very mouthy with me cause he thinks everything passed in front of his face is food, if that’s a finger then well that’s my finger. I have acidophilus on hand and pepto, and kaypeptate. Started the FV 20/50 transition this morning as well. Gonna wait an hour and give Baytril. This baby is gonna be a hand full I swear. Thank you again.

The last time I had a UTI, they very reluctantly gave me cipro again - there are resistance issues starting with cipro and the docs are trying to limit it's use, but the SMZ makes me ill. But this time they are following a new protocol - no more 7 day or even 5 day courses - they have dropped it to 3, which was no problem because as you have seen, if the fluoroquinolone drugs treat what you have, they are like dropping a nuke on the illness.
I think that it may be a good idea to do the same with Archie. That still gives him one more day after today of meds, but if the diarrhea continues, it might be a good idea.
He is a very high maintenance boy! What do you want to bet that the little turd disappears on day 1 of release without so much as a thank you!

Him playing Houdini on day one would not surprise me at all. His response to the Baytril has been amazing. If we can get him through these next couple of days. Meaning today and tomorrow. I reluctantly gave him a bath this morning and what was caked on his bum was more yellow but still no odor. So now we are at the right color we need the right consistency of poo. If the poo starts to have an odor I have Baycox on hand. I will have a fecal done if needed.

I’d keep him at this amount of food at each feeding, even if he acts like he wants more. It’ll give him a chance to adjust and his gut to settle down.

When ever I buy Meyersburg Goats milk it goes directly into the freezer and I use it right from the freezer no chance for it to spoil. Keep fighting LiL Baby.
So let’s pray that this is the end of these series of events of this babies life. Yesterday was rough. Woke up to nasty poos. Dosed with Baycox because that poops had that all familiar smell to it. By 4 pm it was pouring out of him. I contacted Crittermom for dosing of kaopectate. Gave him that. Waited it out. By 10 pm he pooped everywhere. Changed his bedding and fed him. Checked on him at midnight, everything seemed fine no more poops. This morning no poops, he jumped up threw his tail over his back and was ready to go. No poops as of now. He didn’t gain still at 92g. But let’s hope this is the end of the series of events that have plagued this little man. He is on the rise to still be a king.

So finally we have made it to really good news time, insert fingers crossed. So after the train wreck of events that seemed to be never ending. We are off of the Baytril, I ended it early, due to multiple reasons. On day three of Baytril it seemed as if Archie was having seizures after the second dose of Baytril. I dosed him at 12 and 12 every day. After the 12 noon dose he seemed super punked out and I would find him urine soaked in his cage. I kept trying to figure out wth could be causing this. A couple days I would pick him up and he would be just out of it, like not dead just spaced out completely, that usually when he would be urine soaked. I cut his dosage in half just dose him at 12 noon and carried that on for 2 more days finding better results but he still wasn’t quite right. So I just stopped it. There wasn’t anymore labored breathing or clicking. Never witnessing any seizure activity but I was suspecting it. Well that seemed to do the trick. During the Baytril dosing he devolved coccidia and Baycox seems to have kicked that to the curb as well. Once the pooping got to normal meaning no diarrhea or constipation, because that followed the diarrhea, we are on the mend. He went from 91g (last day of Baytril) to 127g this morning. I have held him at 5% up until today and gave him 6%. He is fast and furious about his eating. Yesterday mid feeding he froze and was trembling. Like when I say froze he froze…he stood there head up shaking frozen, like I bumped his nose, slightly tapped his nose, pushed on him and he was frozen stiff???? He was locked into place. In the last three years I have never seen anything like it. Seizure??? Scared??? It took about a minute, minute 30, for him to come out of it. His eyes were not twitching. He wasn’t wobbly or anything after but it sure was strange. He finished eating and everything was fine. Could he still be having seizures? He’s active, happy, playful and seems to be just fine. Is there anything else that could have caused this. Is he going to be able to travel with me to Florida? Would it be best if I left him with Snickerbar? Just some questions.
Mel1959

What you described sounds like a seizure. I think seizures can manifest themselves in many different forms. I think you should take him so Dr. E can take a look at him. She would be able to do bloodwork and put him on the appropriate dose of anti seizure medicine if necessary.
So here it goes lol…I never thought I would completely be out of the woods with this boy, Archie. Can squirrels have PTSD??? Meaning tornado baby, super sweet hates loud noses, scared hiding refuses to eat except when I hold his plate up to the nesting box for him to eat yogurt???? I haven’t touched since he weened. He should be eating my face off right? What if he doesn’t want to go???
Bump because I need guidance???
