So we have had a rough few weeks with our 5 year old squirrel. We were told he had a respiratory infection and were given antibiotics and Lasix. We almost lost him and at one point he had a lot of blood coming out of his nose (this was after 2.5 days of antibiotics). The vet told us if it got to that point his lungs would fill up with blood and he would suffocate but miraculously the next morning he perked up and started drinking water and eating on his own. Fast forward another week and he is back to his perky self chasing the cat around and looking for snacks :) We just finished the 14 days of antibiotics yesterday so today was the first day that I stopped giving them to him. I noticed this afternoon that he still had a runny nose and was sneezing. He is eating a fine (mix of fruits, vegetables and rodent blocks) but he still feels skinny compared to what he was before all these issues started. He is 5 years old and weighed 387 g the last time we were at the vet. I don't have a scale at home so I'm not sure how much weight he has gained since then but he looks considerably better. I've been supplementing with the emeraid omnivore formula since he got sick. After reading through some of the forums I'm worried about his teeth since the vet was not able to check them when we came in (even though he was very sick he was not having the teeth check unfortunately and started to go into panic mode). This is not the best picture since my husband was operating the camera while I held his mouth open. I'm not sure what to look for exactly. I'm pulling his jaw down from the bottom so his bottom teeth may look longer from this angle. Please let me know if you have any advice for what to look for in his teeth or if there are any other issues that may be causing the runny nose. As I said he seems to feel fine and has been playing and eating as normal. 324584

It’s hard to tell, but are both of his upper incisors present? It looks as though one may be missing. What was the antibiotic the vet gave you?

They are all there. I’m not sure what they are supposed to look like but one may be slightly shorter than the other. I’ll try to get a better picture. He has deer antlers and coral to chew on and we give him pecans in the shell but he does not have much interest in trying to open them himself. He will try for a few seconds then hide the pecan somewhere around the house or in his cage. The antibiotics were enrofloxacin and doxycycline he also had an anti inflammatory meloxidyl for 7 days. I gave him some Benadryl last night based on some of the forums I read (.2 ml). I didn’t see his nose running this morning but it is still early so he only got out of bed for a snack and I gave him some more formula then he went back to sleep. How much should he weigh at 5 years old? He will be six in July.

Their weight is different based on geographical area. In Florida the squirrels max out at about 450gr, in northern climates they can weigh over a pound. Judging from where you live I’d assume somewhere in between.

Here is a better picture of his teeth. I had to get my son to help take the picture since my husband cannot work the camera very well. He still has a runny nose. I've been giving him benadryl at night but I'm wondering if I need to give it during the day also? He doesn't act like he feels bad and has been eating like normal. Please let me know if you think his teeth look abnormal or what you think could be causing the runny nose. I don't want him to get a respiratory infection again.
