Hi, so yesterday afternoon at 12 pm i came in to feed my squirrels (1.5 yo male, 7 month old female). I immediately noticed the female squirrel, monkey, had green eyes and very bright pink skin. I initially thought she had gotten into something and irritated her eyes but upon further inspection her skin was pink and there was no irritants on her skin or fur.
she was hot to the touch and sweaty. i am on some facebook groups for squirrel rehabbing and i immediately started looking for answers as to what could be wrong. the vets were closed (sunday) so i have called and called today and ill be able to get her into a vet with some squirrel knowledge on wednesday.
she is eating normal, yesterday she did drink a bit more water than normal, and she is behaving normal as well, playing and running around as regular.
last night her urine was an orangey color and dried into a very bright pinkish color. her poop has been normal this entire time.
yesterday she was given 0.5 ml of liquid childrens benadryl under the recommendation of multiple rehabbers and then also treated a couple times over several hours with charcoal.

this morning her skin had returned to normal. gums are pink, whites on her eyes are pinkish when i pull her eyelid down. behavior is regular. eyes however are still green. cannot find out anything online for what could be happening. she does not have access to any plants, medications, or chemicals. no plugged in electronics either.

her eyesight doesnt seem affected but shes naturally more timid in nature so im not 100% sure.
any insight would be appreciated and what i can do in the mean time to keep her improving.

Holy cow! The red skin makes sense for any number of things - allergic reaction (you need to really keep track of what she is eating) first and foremost, but the green eyes! I assume they look like this in different light? I have seen cloudy eyes from malnutrition or actual blindness but never green.

yeah i feel super horrible that she may have eaten something she shouldn’t have. i just cannot find anything in my room that could have done this to her.

the eyes are green in every lighting, i cannot find anything on the internet about this, and in previous photos from the 26th i can start to see a very slight hint of green developing so i don’t know what is causing that

I truly don’t have a lot to offer, in regards to this. But I will certainly be praying for her and for you, and I hope she starts doing better soon!

What I CAN say though, is these little critters are INCREDIBLY smart, and VERY good at figuring things out, getting into things, and then hiding any evidence of it. Lol (did I say SMART lol) I have a room that is COMPLETELY “squirrel proofed”, where my single girl has overwintered with me. It has her big cage, a billion wooden crates, shelves, branches etc, on the walls, ropes, fleece, tubes and so on and so on all over the place. I have a hardwood workbench in there with a couple drawers, and it is the only place in the room where I would put anything I might potentially want to keep her out of/away from…(like maybe screws/hdwr/scissors, misc things I would use to continue adding onto and building more for her) cause squirrels certainly can’t open and close drawers right? Haha WRONG.

My smart little squirrel figured that out apparently! And after she did, she was even smart enough to close it again behind herself! So she figured out how to open them (and the slides click into place, to the point where I have to tug on them pretty hard to open), got out whatever she decided she wanted, and closed them again so I wouldn’t know. UNTIL I found Pieces of a demolished sharpie hidden very well! I was freaking out for days, worried she could’ve been poisoned from chewing on all the felt and marker pieces.

soooo in other words… they are incredibly clever and resourceful. And I NEVER would have known to now keep those drawers basically cleared out, except for stuff that I would PREFER she not get into, but wont hurt her if she does. So, it MIGHT be worth going through whatever room or areas she has any access to with a FINE tooth comb?

I’m not insinuating in anyway this is your fault. I can’t even begin to imagine what might be going on with her. But it’s always best to be 100% sure, just in case there might be something they could’ve gotten into.

I was floored when I discovered she was sneaking behind/between the wall/underneath the bench, pushing the drawers open, digging around, taking what she wanted (Willy nilly) then making an effort to close the drawers, and hide ANY evidence of her theft, or “abilities”. Now that I know. She thinks it’s hilarious to tease me, flaunt her abilities, or even crawl into the drawers and hide while I’m in the room. So funny.

I hope your girl is ok!!!!

Keep us updated. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Please keep us updated on what the vet says. Is the vet Dr. Dan?

i don’t know who dr. dan is. i don’t even know if i will be able to get a vet to see them because i called and the receptionist won’t let me make an appointment. she says call tomorrow in case they have cancelations. my 1.5 year old male is now developing green pupils, he’s been locked in his cage since sunday. maybe a little warm to touch but no other symptoms. i don’t know what to do and i don’t know how a vet will help me with this

I’m not sure which hospital you called, but the one I know of that sees squirrels is Dr. Dan Johnson, Avian and Exotic Animal Care, 8711 Fidelity Blvd, Raleigh, NC, 919-844-9166.

You could also call around to other hospitals and ask if they see squirrels. Hospitals that see exotics are your best bet. Be careful if your state is one where squirrels are confiscated.

hi thank you! i got monkey an appointment to carolina intergrative vet for thursday morning with dr marlow. i didn’t want to take them to a north carolina vet because of the laws. there is a few here that *will* but the exotic vets weren’t in and they couldn’t get me any appointments. so far both are still doing well and are being given milk thistle for liver support, cranberry for urinary tract support, and i’m considering adding echinacea to the mix to help with immune. there is probably 20 people involved right now in trying to figure this out and eagerly waiting for this vet appointment. here is a picture of my male squirrel who is now developing the green eyes. i think i’m just going to take Monkey since her eyes are very progressed and also because she probably isn’t going to bite the vets

Great! I’m sorry I thought you were in NC. We have a member who’s a rehabber along the coast that might have some vet resources, too. I can put you in contact with her if you’d like? And another member/administrator in Madison, SC.

Monkey’s coloring looks much better and it almost looks as though the green is subsiding. As far as you can tell, are they still able to see ok?

that picture is of Lucky, my male squirrel who is now developing the green color. monkey’s are still bad. as far as i can tell their vision is intact and monkey has had no issues making accurate jumps.

I have to tell you, I quite pride myself in my ability to squeeze information from the internet. I have tried every possible mixture of search terms and NOTHING. Lots of gooey GREEN discharge, nothing for spectacular if terrifying blue green I would kill for eye color. If you get answers, you MUST share them with us because google and I are stumped.

I spoke with the other member in SC. She doesn’t know of any vets in your area but did mention that the vets are no longer allowed to work on wildlife in SC. Please check to be sure that wherever you are taking them is safe and they won’t be confiscated. You might call Dr. Dan Johnson and check to see if taking to him is an option.

she made me specify pet and they did not write species name down and just had her listed as rodent, they also were unsure until i sent photos and the vet tech thinks they really need to be scene by someone, so i think they are doing it a little more under the table as my last vet did. they are really my last option at this point. there was two other vets in SC who *would* see them the but exotic vets weren’t in so maybe there is a loophole with the rules with wildlife

i have the blood panel from the vet but she hasn’t called me yet to go over it. it might even be til monday before i hear from her. i am happy to put it here or send it to anyone interested in looking at it. from what i can tell it says she’s got low white blood cells, decreased platelets, and “slight” polychromasia. the vet cut her nails without my permission yesterday so when i got home her quick ended up getting exposed while she was playing and she bled a lot, like shot on the wall behind her cage, smeared all over the cage, all over herself. i got it under control with flour but it was really alarming to me. i never cut their nails

I’m glad you were able to get the bleeding under control. Frightening.

Yes, please post the lab results. There are folks on here that can understand them and comment.

okay so a different vet said that i shouldn’t be concerned with the low wbc, platelets etc bc there was a clot in the sample. no answers but since they are both doing good i don’t need to worry so much. i guess my vet will call on monday hopefully

It would be helpful if you’d start a new thread in the section heading NON-EMERGENCY HELP NEEDED. This way more eyes will see it and be able to help.

Baby squirrels are not capable of surviving in the wild until they are about 3 months old. Can you take a picture of them and upload it? What have you been feeding them? Can you share some more info? I can try to locate someone in your area to help if you’d like?

Here is the website for licensed wildlife rehabilitators in Florida. It’s divided by counties. Please reach out to someone on the list near you so you can transfer the babies. They are too young to live on their own in the wild if they are babies. https://myfwc.com/media/5423/licensedwildliferehabilitatorsbyregion.pdf
