Hi all. We have a backyard wild fox squirrel that's about 8mo old. We've always noticed him rocking a bit when he sits (palsy-like), but in the last 3 days we noticed him walking with a whole body tilt/diagonal walk (think the old V8 juice commercial) and also wobbling when he sits (losing balance when he moves a bit). It's been getting worse and today almost fell out of a tree multiple times (losing his balance as he was coming to the ground). We feed this guys almost daily (2 HHB) and he has seemed healthy/uninjured otherwise. With the way its progressing (and considering that he's always been a bit shaky), I'm not getting the vibe that it's a fall injury. I've been researching a bit and wonder about raccoon round worm (we do see raccoons occasionally around the neighborhood) or another worm/parasite that could cause these neuro symptoms. We tried to lure him into a cage to catch him to bring him to a rehabber to help but was unsuccessful. Assuming he makes it through the night, we would like to help him in any way we can. Does anybody have any idea of what this could be or how to tell what the cause is? Are there de-wormer meds that can be given to treat without knowing if it is worms/which one? Any advise is greatly appreciated!

I've had many squirrels like that. Its either from head trauma or disease. If the squirrel can't function properly to survive you need to catch and take him to your nearest Wildlife center and see if they can help him. It seems to be getting worse so that seems to be the right choice. Unfortunately, all the ones I've taken in regards to this had to be euthanized. One of them got better after treatment but it wasn't enough - broke my hope finally.

But they also can't live like that and it often only gets worse and it becomes cruel. Good luck hope this helps.
