View Full Version : Bloody mass protruding from mouth
Last Thursday (10/13), my daughter brought home a squirrel who had been hit by a car with the intent of letting her die peacefully as head trauma was obvious- severe swelling and blood coming from nose. Put her in a warm, quiet, dark box for a few hours and thought she would pass. Then her eyes looked alert and she tried moving around. I started her on meloxicam and Children’s Motrin and the next day she looked so much better. Not super active but had stints of alertness and movement. Her teeth were severely damaged- top gone and bottoms loose- so I started syringe feeding her. Her breathing was raspy and I could hear pneumonia on her lungs so I started her on baytril. All was improving nicely until she coughed up blood yesterday and now there is a bloody mass protruding from her mouth so her tongue is pushed out one side. What could it possible be? Almost looks like lung tissue. 💔💔💔

Posting some pictures could be very helpful.
I wonder if it is a blood clot or even, with the kind of structural damage described, if it might be from the jaw area. Their lower jaw structure is pretty complex and I had a trauma girl once upon a time that had a real messed up broken jaw from being shot.
Also, Ibuprofen and Meloxicam are both NSAIDs so giving both is like double dosing. I would consider stopping the ibuprofen and sticking with the Meloxicam (and use the updated dosing guidelines from WMB 3rd Edition).
Update! She just coughed and more protruded and I was able to gently pull out this large clot!!! Now she’s eating and drinking!!

That’s great news! If she’s missing teeth you should hang on to her until her teeth grow back in. She needs time to recover, too.
Do you detect erratic eye movement or is she circling and not able to walk straight?
There was another one a few hours ago… when I pull it out, again relieved and I can feed her. Her eyes are clear and alert. When she is up and about, her movement is steady and she climbs. Gets exhausted quickly though. Still treating with baytril and meloxicam. Poor little girl is a fighter, that’s for sure.
