FYI - Amoxicillin is only good for about 14 days after it is made into a suspension (liquid) if kept refrigerated.

Hi Mariahb04:
The most common bacteria in a cat's mouth to cause an infection is Pasteurella multocida. This can cause a very serious infection often in less than 24 hours of the bite! Amoxicillin will be effective against Pasteurella, BUT there are a number of other relatively common bacteria associated with infections from a cat bite including Staph. Except for treating an infection caused ONLY by Pasteurella, Amoxicillin is not considered a good choice for most all of the common bacteria causing an infection from a cat bite, including Staph!
Is there any chance you have another antibiotic available. The first line antibiotic for cat bites in veterinary and human medicine is Amoxicillin-clavulanate (Clavamox is a veterinary brand name and Augmentin is a common human medicine brand name for Amoxicillin-clavulanate). Only one tablet would ordinarily be enough. Another good option would be Doxycycline. If you have or can get (from a friend or acquaintance) either of these medications, it would be a better option than Amoxicillin. Please try to locate one of these. Spanky or one of the other Admins can dose either of these for your Squirrel. It may be that a veterinary visit will be necessary. If you leave things as they are with use of Amoxicillin and there is significant improvement in the signs of the infection (such as decreased swelling and decreased redness) in the next 12 hours or so after beginning the amoxicillin; it would suggest that the only bacteria causing infection is Pasteurella and the Amoxicillin could then be continued with frequent monitoring of the infection for continued improvement and eventual resolution. My recommendation would be to try to find another antibiotic, preferably one of the two I mentioned and post this in your thread.
Also, please post the weight of your Squirrel for dosing calculations.

He weighs 183 grams so about 7 ounces. I have doxycycline 100mg capsule. How much of this should I give him?
