Hi everyone,
I have 2 babies, one 7 weeks, the other 6 weeks old. The 6 week old has had diarrhea on and off for the last (almost?) 2 weeks. When I say on and off, he will have bad poops (soft, mucusy, toothpaste like) for a day or 2 then return to the healthiest poo you’ve ever seen. They both have been getting the same care, so same food, same feeding times etc. The 7 week old is doing great. The 6 week old still is gaining weight, eating well, and very active.
Their diet has consisted of 32/40 until eyes opened (7 week old was on it until 6 week old opened eyes) and I gradually switched to 20/50. The diarrhea started when he was only on 32/40. It started out as green and mucus like- then changed to yellow. I had him on flagyl and biosponge along with a probiotic. After the flagyl was finished, I just used biosponge but the diarrhea did not get better. So I did 2 feedings of diastat. No change. Finally I did some pumpkin in his formula and the stool hardened almost immediately. I very slowly transitioned to 20/50 (fully 20/50 2 days ago) and last night the toothpaste like stools began. They have stayed that was for 24 hours now. And now that he is pooping more & on his own it is all over his body. i clean him up of course. Tonight I was advised to give him goats milk esbilac. It seems to be easier on the stomach, i’ve exhausted every other possible fix that I have access to, so that’s why I made the switch. I should emphasize that the stool is not liquid, but I consider mushy as diarrhea. It’s yellow (not sure if I mentioned that). I know that very rarely there are babies that never produce a normal stool throughout their whole rehab time, but I am real worried.
Has anyone experienced something like this? It’s like night and day with him. Either really good stool or bad. Any help is appreciated, like I said he is otherwise perfect, but I am still soso worried.
I got him when he was 10 days old, these past 2 weeks are the only time he’s had diarrhea like this. He had a small bout of diarrhea when he was 3 weeks old but it was quickly resolved.
Thanks in advance!
