New babies found. Approximately 7 weeks. Had a couple hard patches almost like dried sap. We tried warm water with a couple drops of dawn, rubbed gently with washcloth. Tried again with coconut oil it loosened the matted hair and seems like a scab on the skin. Picture as good as I can get it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Ps. Babies are on antibiotics started yesterday have had 3 doses so far. Thanks for any help!

If you think it’s a scab don’t pick at it. If you think it’s sap continue trying to soften it and remove it. Do they all have this scab/sap on them? Did you attempt to reunite with mom by playing the recording of a baby squirrel cry?

What are you feeding? How often? Why are they on antibiotics? Do you have a heating pad set to low under their plastic bin?

Here’s the guide for new found babies. It’s 6 pages long, but an easy read. https://www.henryspets.com/1-baby-squirrel-care-guide/

Mom was killed by a cat. Baby's hung around her body in a bush for at least a few days before found. There were 3, one died before we could get to them (actually think it was a dwarf) to pick them up. We have a male and female both 84G. We're both dehydrated and we got them warm and on pedialyte they took well and got them both peeing and pooping good and hydrated before we started them on any formula. We decided to treat with antibiotics (clavamox .03ml twice a day) in case they were trying to nurse on the dead body and the two had minor abrasions. They're on fox valley 32/40 1cc syringe with miracle nipples. Like I said we weren't sure if it was sap or something else now I believe it's scab maybe from flea bites and matted the hair and if anyone had any good tricks to treat them and get them healed up quicker. They're doing much better since we got them. They were weak and lethargic but now they're exploring and moving around really good. We've done this before just haven't dealt with one with these scabs like this yet. Thanks for the help!

If these little guys are 7 weeks old they shouldn’t be on FV 32/40. You should switch them to FV 20/50 or powdered Esbilac. The FV 32/40 isn’t recommended even for young ones as it tends to turn to sludge in their guts so they can’t process it.

It sounds like you’ve got it under control. There’s lots of TSB folks throughout Florida so if you need help, just ask. :grin2
