I just received a 3-4 week old female grey squirrel today. The people that had her before me found their cat messing with it. Other than a bloody nose that seemed to quickly resolve (their words) there are no obvious injuries.
They put their cats in the house for the night and left the baby squirrel outside to see if Mom would return to get her. She did not. They did not continue to try and reunite baby with Mom in fear of the cats getting her again. So, they began to call around for wildlife assistance to no avail. They kept her warm with a rice sock. Hydrated her with Pedialyte (by syringe) and then began feeding PetLac Puppy milk replacer by bottle :( Obviously these are not the recommended methods but they did the best they could with the knowledge that they had at the time.
Once they realized how time consuming nursing a baby squirrel would be they reached out to me for help. I took over care today about 2 pm. I am hydrating her in between feedings because she seems dehydrated and underweight. She weighs 63 grams. I am noticing that she seems a little sneezy too. Not constant but more often than normal. No clicking when breathing. But she just sneezed a little blood out of her nose before our last feeding. She will take about 1 ml of Pedialyte and about 3ml of watered down Fox Valley 20/50 (Spread apart by 2 hours).
Her energy seems good. She eats well. But I haven't seen a bowl movement or productive pee yet either. I am aware that cat bites can be lethal to squirrels. Even though they didn't see any obvious injuries from the cat should I be treating her with antibiotics? This incident was almost 4 days ago. I hope its not too late. I have human bactrim on hand if that will help?
Please advise. Thank you!
