View Full Version : Illegal to grow Squirrel
Hi,
I picked a baby squirrel in front of my apartment yesterday because even though she/he was crying for a while mom didn't come.
I've seen that Illinois does not allow us to grow Squirrel as a pet.
Actually, I have no plan to make her/him a pet, instead, I would like to care before it can survive itself.
We are looking for how to do it and where to contact.
Would you guys let me know where can I contact to notice my situation to avoid any legal issues?
Thanks

As you say, it is not legal to raise a squirrel in your State. I hope you took a bit of time to read about what is needed to support them on this website. Do not feed a baby, without first hydrating it. Specific formula is required by stage of development.
Counting not just monetary cost; should something an ill health condition develop, a trained squirrel rehabber would know what to do to help this baby. As is, there is no time for a learning curse to prevent mistakes that can easily come at a high cost to these vulnerable young squirrels. Should they not get the proper food and fed be fed the proper way they can pass very quickly Just trying to feed a baby squirrel can result in aspiration which can quickly lead to death.
And though I realize how it feels to have rescued a baby squirrel; the process to raise and release is extremely time consuming including staying up at night to support feedings. Most people with jobs don't have the time to devote themselves to the needs of raising infant and juvenile tree squirrels, that initially require round the clock care.
Choosing experts that have raised and released these squirrels over many years is the best choice for this squirrel.
This is a link to the list of rehabbers by State and region; best to contact a local rehabber to take on the care of this baby asap.

Thank you very much for your kind and detailed reply to my question.
As you explained, I contacted the animal control center nearby and left my information. I hope they will give me a callback asap and hope I can transfer this baby squirrel without any health problems.
Thanks again!

No I did not post for you to contact animal control, but to contact a wildlife rehabilitators in your area using the list I posted the link to, who can can give this baby squirrel the proper care. Animal control euthanizes all wildlife that are turned over to them. kills all the wild animals that are turned over to them save for cats and dogs and other domesticated species. I hope you didn't give them your name and address, for they will take the baby and have it put to sleep..
Call a wildlife rehabber immediately, and take the baby to another location if you have to rather than give it to animal control.
Do not call animal control back, and if they show up at your door, say the baby died.
Immediately contact a wildlife rehabber who is listed that cares for baby orphaned squirrels so it can have a chance at life.

On this page is a list of wildlife rehabilitators. It may not be a current; yet at least there are some wildlife rescue groups listed you can contact, and ask if they know of one in your more immediate area.
Do not take the baby to a hospital nor research group, but a wildlife rehabber. Do not give you name till you are satisfied that the person on the other end is willing and able to care for the baby through to its release.
