Hi, I just received a adult female grey squirrel with broken back and lots of maggots in anus and vagina. I think I got most of them out. Letting her rest before I go another round at it. I’m officially over my getting grossed out by maggots. I’ll get her weight when she dries a little.

can I get any advice with dealing with maggots. This my first time dealing with maggots. Tricks to get them to exit.

I also need to k ow which antibiotics would be best with her. I don’t see any sign of head injury but back is definitely broken and she needs antibiotics for what those maggots have don’t to her bottom.

Call pet stores and see if they have any Capstar (nytenpyram) for dogs and cats. It appear to be available in Canada. It is very safe and mild for the squirrel and SUPER for maggots and fleas. 1/4 tablet diluted in a little water and given orally and in a very short time you will see everything in them running for the exits. You can redose daily if needed.

You want something for the skin - maybe some SMZ-TMP?

Capstar crushed and diluted with water is the only way to kill them. You can use cornstarch and a soft brush while she is dry or even a hairdryer on them kills them. Drying them out, brush/pick them off and then flush with capstar. Give a bit of capstar orally too for internal maggots.

I have revolution. Will that work?

I also have ivermectin paste. That’s used for worms in horses. Would that work?

I also need a dosing for antibiotics for what the maggots have done to her bottom.

I have
amoxicillin 250
cipro 500
prednisone 5
metronidazole 250
ciprofloxicin 500

Weight is 613 grams

Well that one was upside down. Let’s try this again.

He is precious. Can we see a pic of the other end - his wound?

Amoxicillin would work and so would Cipro. I am leaning Cipro because I can remember Patti always reminding me that wounds and things around the back end are very likely to be infected from fecal material which means e coli which means Cipro.

Anyone else have an opinion?

Sent you dosing for both.

I agree with the Cipro; also suggest that you use the higher recommended dose, especially if using Wild Mammal Babies. I remember reading somewhere here that WMB doses Cipro very lightly and so may not be as effective unless you bump up the dosage.

It was much worse before I cleaned it up. The anus was stretched open about and inch and was solid maggots. The vagina was about a centimeter open and also full. I was absolutely mortified when I first saw it. This is my first time having to deal with maggots.

Oh that POOR baby. Keep using the topical so you are going after it from both sides. That is horrifying. Props to you!

I’ve been washing it with salt water. Will that be too drying? Would polisporin be good on it? She feels no pain because the spine is broken. If it wasn’t for that I can imagine the salt water would sting.

I don't think I would use salt water. How about very dilute betadyne solution? Polysporin probably wouldn't hurt. It will help keep it moist.

I just wanted to add an update. She is doing well. The wound on her bottom is shrinking little by little every day. She’s getting feistier too!!! All I can get her to eat is formula and apples. Very strange. She’s so cranky that trying to feed her formula is like sticking that syringe into a pencil sharpener. I try to use the crappiest syringes on her because they’re gonna be one use only (if I’m lucky. Sometimes I have to use several for one feeding.) she’s an angry little lady. Oh she’s been named Maggie Macintosh. I’ll post more photos soon. Thank you everyone for your help.

I just wanted to post an update on this little girl. She has healed so well! When I first got her and saw the maggots I thought for sure she was a goner. This case has to be the most cringeworthy that I’ve ever had and I’ve had some gross ones too.

her bottom looked totally normal now. Now I just got to work on her attitude now. Hahaha. 322819322820
