I have a red fox squirrel that is 3 years old. Her activity and appetite have been fine until Tuesday night. My son heard her make a noise like she was in pain. She didn’t make that noise when I came into the room, but she was acting a bit odd and was out of her nesting bag and would occasionally lightly rub her jaw against the wire shelf she was on. I gave her part of a shelled walnut, which she took hesitantly and buried it. Yesterday she wasn’t interested in food. I did hear her make an sound as if in pain. Last night I examined her mouth and it looks fine. Teeth look good, no swelling or redness noted in the oral cavity. She is drinking fine. Her stool has been unchanged. A vet visit is not an option at least locally in rural Kansas. How can I manage the pain? Should formula be administered while not wanting to eat solids? Also, I’m leaving for an early extended weekend and my teens will have to manage.

With these symptoms we always need to start by ruling out Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD). To do that we need you to provide a complete list of her daily diet as MBD is caused by too many calcium robbing foods (e.g. high phosphorous foods).

I am including a link for the MBD protocol... if you have any doubts, start this protocol as it can do no harm and can only help if this is MBD.
