Hello, I am new to owning a flying squirrel. I am looking for a recipe to make a nutrition block for my approximately 8 week old southern flying squirrel. I would like to have one that has the vitamins in the block that the squirrel needs. If anyone has one I would appreciate it. Also can you tell me if the little flying squirrel will wean himself off the goat milk formula. Or will I have to do that. Like I said I know nothing about a flying squirrel except what I've read online but I could not find a nutrition block recipe thank you in advancejafepf@aol.com

Hello, I am looking for a homemade food block for a southern flying squirrel. I would like a block recipe that includes the proper vitamins. I have seen on other sites food blocks that are homemade for gray squirrels. But I'm not sure if I can use that due to the size difference between the southern flying squirrel and a gray squirrel. If you have a recipe I would appreciate it

Henry's healthy pets sells a block specific for flyers, I'm personally unaware of any homemade block specifically for flyers.
You could try and contact Henry's to ask if they can advise.
We do have a section in: Breed Specific (https://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?4-Breed-Specific) /Flying Squirrel Forum with discussion on a flyer's diet you may want to check out.

Thanks for the information, will my approximately 8 week old southern flying squirrel ween himself off the goat milk formula or must I do that? I guess I would just slowly reduce his amount until he's totally weaned at 12 weeks? And as always thank you for your time

The goat's milk formula is only meant to serve as a temporary formula, it does not offer the complete daily nutrition that is required.
He should have been transitioned to a more complete formula, however seeing that he is 8 weeks now I would continue with the
Goat's milk and definitely introduce him to a good quality rodent block that will provide the needed nutrition.

We do not recommend weening by allowing them to wean themselves when they are ready. With the majority this will take place on
their own once they are eating solid foods always starting with a quality rodent block. You want them to be eating that and eating them
well before other solids are introduced.

The best block for Flyers is the one made by Henry’s Healthy Pets. They make a specific block for flyers, but mine prefer the Picky version .

Here is the recipe they offer to make your own:

322121

The Henry’s Diet is the top one. I’m not familiar with the second one. I would stick with the Henry’s recipe.
Mine also like the Harlan Teklad 2018 version . Block and protein are very important. Also veggies, and limited fruits and nuts. Natural foods (limbs, plants and flowers ) offer enrichment .

If you will go to “Breed Specific” title of the forum, you will find a Flying Squirrel section. It has a ton of info to help get you on the right track for these sweet babies :) It also has a food pyramid specifically for flyers, and lists of safe natural foods.
