I have five week old with a runny nose. It just started today. I took her in the bathroom earlier to try and clear her passages and ran the hot water to make it all steamy. She has eaten fine today and has been active after eating. She has been taking 5ml of fv formula 4x/ day. Her bathroom habits have been normal as well. I am trying to wake her up for a feeding and noticed her breathing is different. Stuffy/runny nose again, like earlier today. I am very worried. I do have Baytril on hand, as well as probiotics. She weighs 113g. Any help would be much appreciated, thank you.

It is great that you have Baytril on hand, always highly recommended for anyone raising a baby squirrel... there is just not enough time to try to find it after they become sick.

Since her appetite is still good and assuming there is not a clicking coming from her chest, I'd not start antibiotics. But let us know if that changes... we'll need to know the strength of the Baytril as well as her weight for dosing if that becomes necessary.

Has her environment changed at all.. maybe the windows are being opened as we et into Spring and there is pollen. A new detergent or softener that was used on her bedding. Even new bedding that was used new without washing first. Sometimes those plug in (or sprayed) air fresheners can cause runny noses (squirrels are extremely sensitive to smells).

Thank you for responding. No, I don’t hear any clicking from her chest. As far as her environment, there was something about her bedding. She had a fleece blanket (at least I think that’s what it was) as her bedding. The problem with that blanket is that it’s quite worn. I’ve had it for a LONG time. I didn’t realize it before using, but yesterday, when I woke her in the morning for her feeding, I noticed she was sort of sneezing like she was trying to get something out of her nose. I tried to look closely (my eyes can’t see up close very well), but I was able to see that there was FUZZ right at her nostrils. That freaked me out. So, no more of that blanket for bedding. I swapped that out with fairly new one. (btw Costco is great for buying fleece blankets) I am worried she had inhaled some of the fuzzies from the previous blanket. Because yesterday after I changed to the new (fleece blanket) bedding I was still noticing her doing that sneezing thing and found more fuzzies at her nostrils, along with the runny/stuffy nose. Both blankets had been washed in unscented detergent. There actually has been a lot of pollen in the air here recently.
Thanks again, she seems stable now. I will let you know if anything changes.
