View Full Version : She's growing so fast!

Ehh I wasn't ready for her to grow up so fast. Her eyes opened fully last Wednesday. I started giving her formula soaked cheerios for her to suck on this weekend. Yesterday I started mixing a little baby food sweet potatoes with her formula, which she gobbles up. She's eating about 10cc a feeding now and she eats 4-5 times a day. She's not interested in solids at all yet, I figure I'll keep offering them and eventually she'll want them. Does that all sounds normal? Any ideas on any foods she might love or is she still just a little too young for it? Also is it okay to offer a little formula in a bowl after her normal feeding so she gets used to drinking from a bowl?

Today, for the first time, when I went to get her for a feeding she was up playing in her crate. I guess it's time to move her to the big cage. Silly girl, she's so darn cute. Oh one more question she barely pees when I stimulate her belly anymore but she's obviously going in her bed, is she old enough that I can stop or should I keep it up for awhile longer?

Thanks for all your help and all you do. I truly don't know how you all do it. I'm so glad I had this opportunity but I don't think I'll be doing it again. It's so much more responsibility than I bargained for.

Sorry that no one responded when you first posted. As GB said, there have been a rush of emergencies and so we have perhaps looked at a post where things look under control and think "oh, I'll come back later" :shakehead -- Please don't take it personally -- and keep asking til you get an answer :D

"First foods" frequently include Cheerios and apple chunks, sweet potato chunks (large enough that they just nibble and can't accidentally choke on them). If you want to try to get them started on good nutrition, keep "rodent block" or "monkey biscuits" in their cage (both can be ordered from Chris' website or KayTee Forti-Diet rodent block can be found at some pet stores). But unless this is introduced very quickly, they may say "yuck! I liked the apple better!"

When they first start, it is more "shredding" than eating, but eventually some gets in their tummies. They are still getting their nutrition from the formula.

There are a few other threads which talk about First Foods and such, but I can't put my finger (mouse) on them right now.

Oh! And enjoy all the cuteness :Love_Icon -- I think this is the very most adorable age!!

thanks so much for the help and for answering my never ending supply of questions. Here's an update for you, my husband finally admitted that he's in love with her and doesn't mind helping with all of the squirrel care. this whole time i thought it was a huge imposition on him. He also named her which i hadn't done because he was worried about me turning her into a pet. So her name is hunny. She's still getting formula 4 times a day and one serving of baby food sweet potatoes. She learned how to climb her cage today and was a complete monkey. I love my baby.

They do grow-up fast and their sooo.. sweet and adorable doing it. You've done a great job with her, you should be very proud. Before you know it she'll be jumping through the trees, saying thanks Mom.

those are great pictures of Bean! she is adorable! I swear i am going to get batteries for my camera this weekend and tear the house apart so i can find the cord. i've missed most of her young life already, i'd like to get at least one baby picture.

You're so right about not looking at squirrels in the same way. I was watching some of them play today on my lunchbreak, and all i could think about was how dangerous what they were doing was. they were running back and forth on the electrical wires, across the street, and then diving into trees. they seemed to be having the time of their lives but i do not want my Hunny walking on a tightrope 30ft above the ground. Is it horrible that i almost wish i couldn't release her for some reason?

Since you love Hunny so much, I believe your heart will tell you what is right for her. Hunny will probably also have something to say about it too! Whether you keep her or release her, she owes her life to you. :Love_Icon
