Hello,
I have a rehabilitated squirrel that has been out in the wild for almost a year. She has a gash in her abdomen and we do not know how it happened. Can anyone help us with how to help her heal. We are in California where most vets do not help squirrels.

I'm not from the same area mat all :( In the meanwhile, where is the little one right now? If still outside, does she seem pregnant or swollen teats? A photo of her and the wound could help us evaluate. If need be, and you haven't done so yet, could you trap her and care for her?

Hoping someone comes over to help soon. Thank you for helping this poor little one. :Love_Icon

She is not pregnant.

Is there any more background info? How long was it since you last saw her before she presented with this wound?

I am not really sure what that might be: Perhaps a huge abscess that burst? An older injury that she may have removed dead tissue?

As for treatment, I would:
1) Bring her in and kleep her in for treatment....
2) I would give her Bactrim (TMP/TMZ) just to be sure.
3) Irrigate that wound with Betadine solution (dilute with water, 20 drops to 1 cup of water) and maybe apply some Neosporin ointment (stop the Neosproin if it causes her to "fuss" with the wound too much).

If you do not have access to bactrim, post what antibiotics you do have access to and someone will advise on if that will be a good choice with this wound. FOr dosing assistance post the strength of the medication (e.g. 250mg capsule or 50mg/5ml) and the weight of the squirrel.
