Story goes something like this. A rehabber is handing a baby over to Marie this morning. They said he seems different????? The baby is being transferred to me by request of the rehabber and Marie. Could it be? Hmmmm there are some familiar sounding characteristics in this baby. I can not wait to see this nugget and know for sure. So update coming very soon. We don’t have photos yet. :serene:serene:serene

So I have a video of him and as soon as I can upload it then I will post the link. Stitch (that’s what I named him) is a whooping 89g, full set of teeth, full of life, short nosed, stumpy front legs, wonky bag legs, really loving and affectionate agile little baby. His fur is super soft and long, he has extra skin where there may or not may be some man pillows developing. He has a boo boo on them also which I am going to treat and inspect. His eyes are not quite black either. They seem kinda cloudy. He eats like he is starving but according to his weight we are at 4.45 ml at 5%. Guys I have no idea what he is or what to label him as, but I can tell you this. He is not a normal baby. I see Ringer in him and everything tells me that he is a form of a dwarf, but I am unsure. Mostly because maybe that is what I want to see..

It is literally true with flying squirrels. Their, um, pillows are about half the size of their body! But only during mating season; then they go away. I guess when you spend your life hurling yourself off trees and landing on things hundreds of feet away you don't want something like that banging around. Pretty sure all the male members of the board just involuntarily crossed their legs... :grin3 You're welcome.

Have you seen a full grown male squirrels package? The look like huge pillows. Like one day they aren’t there next day they are the size of a plum…. Js

I think you will have to wait and see whether with good nutrition he grows or if he is truly a dwarf. That was how I discovered Joey was a dwarf….I kept feeding and he didn’t get bigger.

The last “dwarf” I got was previously with two different rehabbers…who both thought he was a dwarf. I was told he couldn’t climb and was at least 10 weeks old when I got him. I discovered he could climb, actually moved very well and could even do zoomies. I transferred him to another rehabber that was going to give him a forever home. She continued feeding FV 20/50 and he has grown to a pretty normal squirrel. He now weighs 325-350gr, which is close to what young Florida squirrels weigh.

My point is that looks can be deceiving sometimes. A bumbling walk, almond shaped eyes, ears sitting lower on the head, short legs and tail are all classic characteristics. Climbing can be limited, good or non-existent….so it’s not a good gauge.

I said the same thing with him, he looks normal but he definitely is not. The soft baby kitten fur and his seemingly calm nature says he could be. We will see as he grows older and is on a consistent diet of formula.

Fur, and lack of it, can be nutrition related. As for the behavior, the little guy I had had everyone convinced he was “different”. It was only after a couple of weeks did he start to really show his true self.

Apparently I need to start watching more squirrel videos.

My experience with squirrels is pretty much limited to Red and Taz, who are both girls. Although it's probably a good thing I don't have a boy squirrel...I would have woken up one day, seen these huge plum sized man pillows, panicked, and then panic posted in the life threatening thread ....

I can not wait to read one of those post. Stitch is doing pretty good, he has some stinky poo, it’s going to Snickerbar to get check (the poo). He gained only 1g from them to me with 5 feedings yesterday at 5%. So…now what…

You can always add Ultraboost to his formula. I always use it.

So here are the results of the poo. I’m not happy but not terribly worried :/

Snickerbar is sending them to Dr. E and Bricker. Let’s hope it’s not what we think. So we wait..

She recommended Albon and Fenbendazole,

I loaned my book to my tech with baby bunnies,
Does someone have the dose for Albon for 90 g baby?

So quick update on Stitch. He is topping out at 125g as of this morning. Fecal showed round worm and coccidia. So we have been on Albon and Panacur for 5 days. It says in the Wild Mammal Babies Bible to treat for 3-5 days then again in 2-3 weeks for the Panacur. So my question is this. Do I just have a fecal done on day six for Panacur and if round worms are still present do I continue treatment? What I don’t want is for the round worms to reestablish and get into a endless cycle of treat maintain etc…Then with the Albon….if I could get Baycox I know this would be easier but we don’t have it do not know how to get it at this point. His poops are better but still have odor…it says in the Bible we could treat up to 14-21 days? The Albon we dosed on 25mg/kg which is on the light side. We were worried about over loading his tiny system, he was 90g when we started and was basically skin stretched over bone. Now that we are starting to get mass on him do we up the Albon at 50mg/kg?

Is it the 50mg/ml oral suspension? WMB says .07ml for 75 grams baby; .10 for 100 gram baby so I would do .07ml. Loading dose of twice the dose on day 1. SID 14-21 days.

Baycox is just barely available in large animal size - https://www.newegg.com/bayer-baycox-5-toltrazuril/p/02W-00E0-00005

Are you questioning if you should retreat with the Panacur after the initial treatment? The answer is “yes”. You don’t even need to test prior to treatment again. When treating raccoons for roundworm you get on a schedule for worm dosing and maintain it. Dr. E is very aggressive with her deworming for raccoons and recommends both Panacur and Pyrantel.

I’m not questioning the retreatment I am questioning the 2-3 weeks later? I worry about if there are any left then the amount that would multiply in the 2-3 week wait.

I haven’t updated in a while with this one so I thought I would give a run down on the latest. He just isn’t “normal”. He is very agile like a “normal” baby, but still much smaller. He can climb, hop, shred wood, eats good, chatters his teeth, hums, and nibbles and licks. What he can’t do…he can’t “jump” or land if he tries. We found that out today when he tried to do a leap of faith off the cat tree into the wall then a small kick to recover and splat into the floor. He is ok believe me because I spent the next hour with him running across and over and around my head, neck and shoulders. Maybe one day he will get the jump part down..? So anyways he is at 266g short, wide, compact, sweet lovable, huggable, full of spunk, and attitude. What to do now? Keep him safe and love him is what we do. He still doesn’t look like a normal baby squirrel, arms are short, tail is short, head doesn’t look quite right, nor does his short really wide body. I am adding a photo of him. Behind him is a cube that was cut on an 8x8 square and sewn together and you will get the jest of it. 321704

Cute little guy you have on hands. He looks indeed out of proportion. I saw some new babies in my local park just yesterday, they all look rather long and skinny.

You may have a keeper, so to speak.

Yea he is a tad out of proportion…as I said very normal in most aspects, but not normal in others. He is learning and getting stronger and chubbier daily. We still question whether or not he is going to be releasable in the future. He is definitely got to do some growing if he will be. His length as increased some but all in all he still has short stubby arms and big hands. At the moment I am trying to figure out, out of cage time since he seems to not able to navigate normally (the splat on the wall) and the 5 foot drop on to the floor. I have let him run around on the critter nation but I’m right there ready to catch him if he decides to take a leap of faith that he can’t seem to make.

Try to provide him some learning time in a small room, like a guest bathroom, and put down 2 or 3 of those thick moving blankets that you can find at Home Depot. That will save him from being hurt when he learns to jump.
